The center of the French market is the Euronext stock exchange, created when the Paris exchange merged with the Dutch and Belgian bourses in 2000 (local exchanges were closed in 1990), which listed 1,653 companies with a total capitalization of euro2.4 trillion (1.7% of French GDP) in 2000. In 1996, a new electronic trading floor called the "Nouveau Marché" was created in which new companies, especially smaller ones with an emphasis on growth and technology, can raise start-up capital.
