Survey

Noun

1. A detailed critical inspection.

2. Short descriptive summary (of events).

3. The act of looking or seeing or observing; "he tried to get a better view of it"; "his survey of the battlefield was limited".

Verb

1. Consider in a comprehensive way; "He appraised the situation carefully before acting".

2. Look over in a comprehensively, inspect; "He surveyed his new classmates".

3. Keep under surveillance; "The police had been following him for weeks but they could not prove his involvement in the bombing".

Aerospace

The process of determining accurately the position, extent, contour, etc., of an area, usually for the purpose of preparing a chart. (references)

Archeological

The process of locating archeological sites and features over a specific area. It is the first step (Phase I) in archeological reconnaissance that usually involves mapping the site, as well as any artifacts and features. Some artifacts may be collected depending on the field collecting strategy of the project. (references)

An enumeration or index of the number of individuals in an area from which inferences about the population can be made (Ralph 1981:578) (cf Census, Count). (references)

Census

A data collection activity involving observation or questionnaires for a sample of a population. (A census is a 100-percent sample survey; it collects information about every member of a population.) Surveys are normally less expensive to conduct than censuses; hence, they may be taken more frequently and can provide an information update between censuses.
