Occupations

Controls charging machine to charge open-hearth furnaces with materials, such as limestone, pig iron, and metal scrap: Moves controls to engage arm of charging machine in slot of charging box. Pushes levers to position charging machine at door of furnace, to thrust box through door, and to rotate arm, dumping contents of box on furnace floor. Withdraws empty box, disengages arm, and moves to next furnace to repeat process. May charge furnace with molten metal and be designated Hot-Metal Charger (steel & rel.). (references)
