Mastic is a hard, transparent resin collected by crusting the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). Flavouring for liquors (masticha alcoholic drink) and chewing gum pastiles are some of its uses. It was the Sultan's privilege to chew mastic, and it was considered to have healing properties.The best qualities grow in the Greek island of Chios.

Mastic is a town located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15,436.Geography
Mastic is located at 40°48'8" North, 72°50'38" West (40.802090, -72.843953)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²). 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.05% water.Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 15,436 people, 4,451 households, and 3,761 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,330.3/km² (3,445.1/mi²). There are 4,732 housing units at an average density of 407.8/km² (1,056.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.26% White, 6.05% African American, 1.72% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 3.59% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. 12.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,451 households out of which 49.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.5% are non-families. 10.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.45 and the average family size is 3.67. In the town the population is spread out with 32.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 5.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $53,657, and the median income for a family is $54,047. Males have a median income of $41,721 versus $28,468 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,275. 13.0% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line.
