To luff is to turn the head of a ship towards the wind.

A ship is said to spring her luff when she yields to the helm by sailing nearer the wind.

The word luff in sailing has three meanings, all related. A luff is the front edge of a sail. A luff is also the act of turning a sailboat toward the wind. Finally, a luff is the movement of the front part of a sail when it is turned into the wind so that the wind pressure changes sides.
