Elf versus dwarf In modern fantasy fiction literature, such as Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, the opposite natures of elves and dwarfs was taken a step further. Elves eat and sleep lightly, if at all, while dwarfs eat, drink, and sleep deeply. Elves are thin and agile, while dwarfs are stout and strong. Elven men very rarely have beards, while dwarf men and (sometimes) women often have beards. Dwarfs stay to fight to the death, while the elves sail away. Elves tend to be proficient in Magic, while Dwarfs are either distrustful or incapable of magic, and in some cases will use technology (often steam-driven) instead. Both races wear and use medieval weapons and armor, although Elves are often portrayed as using bows or long, thin blades, while Dwarfs are typically depicted using stouter, more solid weapons such as hammers and axes. These themes are used many times in many fictional fantasy adventure novels, RPGs, computer games, magazines and other media. (references)

Guns versus butter model In economics, the guns versus butter model is the classic example of the production possibility frontier. It models the relationship between a nation's investment in defense and civilian goods. In this model, a nation has to choose between two options when spending its finite resources. It can buy either guns or butter, or a combination of both. This can be seen as an analogy for choices between defense and civilian spending in more complex economies. (references)

The fights were seen by many members of society around the world in a wider sense than that of being just a fight between two Heavyweights: Because of the social and political changes that the United States and Germany were going through during the 1930s, the fights were seen by many as a statement of political and social superiority by the winner. Kasparov versus The World This move was a novelty by the World Team, i.e. a move which had never before been played in a recorded game. Their combined advocacy, plus much discussion on the bulletin board, was enough to gain it 53% of the vote. (references)
King and pawn versus king The chess endgame with a king and a pawn versus a king is the most important and fundamental endgame, other than the basic checkmates. It is important to master this endgame, since most other endgames have the potential of reducing to this type of endgame via exchanges of pieces. It is important to quickly be able to tell whether a given position is a win or a draw, and to know the technique for playing it. The crux of this endgame is whether or not the pawn can be promoted or queened, so checkmate can be forced. (references)
Lakers versus Celtics Lakers versus Celtics was a 1988 video game that was available for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo game consoles, as well as for computers. Echoĭci Versus Antiquities Echoĭci Versus also called Serpentīni. A name given to verses in which the first words of the hexameter are repeated as the second half of the following pentameter. The name is also given to palindromes, in which the line reads the same both backwards and forwards. These trifles were composed by both the Greeks and the Romans. Martial speaks slightingly of them (carmen supinum, ii. 86). Further examples will be found in Apoll. Sid. (Epist. viii. 11), Venantius Fortunatus, Sedulius, and among the Poetae Latini Minores (iv. 260-267). See Friedländer on Martial ii. 86; and for other metrical whims, the articles Abecedarii Versus; Acrosticha; Cento; Hymnus; Leonini Versus; Sotadici Versus. (references)

Leonīni Versus Antiquities Leonīni Versus. A name given especially to a form of the Latin hexameter and pentameter rhymed in the middle and at the end. They are ascribed to Leoninus, Canon of the Church of St. Victor in Paris about the middle of the twelfth century, and by some to Pope Leo II.; but they occur in the classical Latin writers of the Augustan Age. Such is the line of Vergil: “Limus ut hic durescit et haec ut cera liquescit;”and this from Ovid: “Quot caelum stellas, tot habet tua Roma puellas. ”In the Middle Ages, however, they were systematically written and chiefly by poets who let their rhyme take the place of syllabic quantity. Many famous old couplets are leonine. Such is the original of “When the devil was ill,” etc. -- “Daemon languebat, monachus tunc esse volebat: Ast ubi convaluit, mansit ut ante fuit. ”And the famous epitaph of Bede in Durham Cathedral: “Hac sunt in fossa, Bedae venerabilis ossa. ”And this skit on the legal profession: “Dirue iuristas, Deus, ut Satanae citharistas; O Deus extingues hos pingues atque bilingues!”And the punning line on the Fair Rosamond: “Hic iacet in hac tumba rosa mundi non rosa munda. ”For a full account of the leonine verse, with abundant specimens, see J. Grimm, Lat. Gedichte; Trench's introduction to his Sacred Latin Poetry; Leyser, Historia Poetarum Medii Aevi, p. 832-837; and, especially, Eberhard's Labyrinthus, a sort of mediaeval Ars Poetica. cf. also the article Rhyme in this Dictionary. Saturnius Versus Antiquities Saturnius Versus “Saturnian verse. ” The earliest (native) verse of the ancient Italians, of which at the present time only fragments exist in the shape of religious songs and ritualistic formulas, is accentual rather than quantitative in its metrical character, and is hardly to be reduced to a definite system. The verse, however, in general (numerus Italicus) seems to be based upon a series of four theses, sometimes separate but usually combined in twos and threes. The following prayer to Mars (Cato, R.R. 141) is an example: Márs páter té précor | quáesóque úti síes | vólens própítiús. Of these early rhythms, the so-called “Saturnian verse” is the most regular, as it is the one of which we have the greatest number of existing examples. It consists of two parts, each containing three theses. As to its exact character there are three theories: (a) the Accentual Theory; (b) the Quantitative Theory; and (c) the Modified Accentual Theory. (a) Accentual Theory. --This regards the Saturnian line as divided into two halves, the first having three theses and the second either three or two. If only two, the second half of the line usually has an introductory unaccented syllable (Anacrusis). The quantity of the syllables plays no part in the scansion of the verse. Examples are the following: Quóius fórma virtútei || parísuma fúitand Dábunt málum Metélli || Naévió poétae. (b) Quantitative Theory. --This regards the Saturnian as a trochaic senarius with Anacrusis and a caesura after the third arsis or (rarely) after the third thesis. Short syllables may be lengthened by the ictus or metrical accent, and hiatus is allowed everywhere, being most common in the caesura. Examples are the following: Eorúm sectám sequóntur || múlti mórtálesand Cornéliús Lucíus || Scípió Barbátusand Quoius fórma vírtutei || parísumá fúit. Scholars differ greatly in their explanation of the verse in applying the quantitative theory, some using protraction freely, others rejecting the diastolé or lengthening of short vowels. The former regard the normal number of feet in each hemistich as four, e.g. Dabúnt malúm Metéllí || Naévió poétae--thus assimilating this scheme to that of the numerus Italicus in general as described above. (c) Modified Accentual Theory. --This regards the number of theses in the first hemistich as three, and that in the second hemistich as two, with the accent falling at the beginning of each line. The number of syllables in the first hemistich is normally seven, in the second six, admitting, however, an extra short syllable where the ordinary pronunciation would suppress or slur it. A final short vowel is elided; otherwise partial (semi-) hiatus is allowed, and at the caesura a full hiatus. After the first two feet there is an alternation between words accented on the first and those accented on the second syllable. Examples are: Dábunt málum Metélli | Naévio poétaeand Prima incédit Céreris | Prosérpina púer. The name “Saturnian” is applied to the verse either because much used in the early harvest songs in honor of Saturn or from the general meaning of “ancient” attached to the adjective Saturnius. (cf. Verg. Ecl. iv. 6; and Nettleship, Lectures and Essays, i. p. 55-57). Bentley regarded the verse as Greek in its origin, but the general opinion now held makes it indigenous to Italy; Hermann viewing it as Etruscan rather than Italian, but with no good reason. It is, in fact, a measure that finds its counterpart in the early literature of other Indo-European peoples, in the Spanish epic of the Cid, and in the Nibelungenlied; while every one is familiar with Macaulay's identification of it with the nursery line-- The queen was in her parlor || eating bread and honey. The Saturnian verse was used by the poet Naevius in writing his epic on the Punic War (Bellum Punicum), and by Livius Andronicus in his Latin version of the Odyssey. See Livius; Naevius. Reference may be made to the following works: Hermann, Doctrina Metr. iii. 9; Bernhardy, Röm. Lit. p. 70 foll.; Klotz, Altrömische Metrik (1890); Lindsay, The Latin Language, p. 128 (note), 132, 159 (1894); id. in the American Journal of Philology, vol. xiv.; Teuffel in Jahn's Jahrbücher, lxvii. p. 281 foll.; Westphal, Allgemeine Metrik, p. 251-256 (1865); Spengel in Philologus, xxiii. p. 81-113; Bücheler in Jahn's Jahrbücher, lxxvii. p. 61; Streuber, De Inscriptionibus Quae ad Numerum Saturnium Referuntur (Zürich, 1845); Ritschl, Saturniae Poeseos Reliquiae (Bonn, 1854); Allen, Early Latin, p. 12, 13 (1880); and Gildersleeve and Lodge, Lat. Grammar, p. 462, 463 (1894). Weise in a treatise published at Quedlinburg (1839) tries to show traces of the Saturnian in Plautus. For the identity between the Saturnian and the Old German epic line, see the monograph by Bartsch (Leipzig, 1867). (references)

Min. iii. 243), the names of the winds (id. v. 383), on the constellations (id. v. 349 foll.). They are in Latin, and do not in all probability antedate the fifth or sixth century A.D. cf. Isidor. Wash versus trim Agriculture USDA requires that any time fecal contamination is detected during meat and poultry processing, it must be removed from the carcass. At issue is how this rule has been applied and enforced by USDA in meat and poultry plants. For a number of years, poultry processors have been permitted to either rinse (wash) off or cut (trim) away such contamination, but beef processors have only been permitted to (trim) it with a knife-which they argue costs them money in lost product weight and imposes a requirement that poultry producers do not have to meet. The policy jargon for this debate is "wash versus trim." USDA, early in 1997, clarified its zero tolerance rule for poultry; a year earlier it gave beef plants permission to use a new high-temperature vacuuming method to remove fecal contamination in lieu of cutting it off.
