Common Expressions: Noli me Tangere

ExpressionsDefinition
Noli me tangereNoli me tangere is the Latin version of the words spoken, according to the Gospel of John, by Jesus to Mary Magdalen, meaning "touch me not" (the quotation appears in John 20:17). The words were a popular trope in Gregorian chant, and the moment in which they were spoken was a popular subject for paintings. (references)
Noli Me Tangere (novel)This novel and its sequel, El Filibusterismo (nicknamed Fili), were banned in the Philippines because of their portrayal of corruption and abuse by the country's Spanish government and clergy. An example which has become a classic in the Philippines is 'Padre Damaso' which reflects the covert fathering of the Spanish clergy of children. In the story, Padre Damaso impregnates a woman. Copies were smuggled in nevertheless and when Rizal returned to the Philippines after completing medical studies, he quickly ran afoul of the local government. First exiled to Mindanao, he was later arrested for "inciting rebellion" based largely on his writings. Rizal was executed in Manila on December 30, 1896 at the age of thirty-five. (references)
