Pharmacist is preparing cd4, which is a new treatment for AIDS and ARC (AIDS-related complex). cd4 is administered intravenously by a syringe pump, in the foreground, which is programmed to infuse cd4 over a 24-hour period. cd4 acts like a decoy and blocks the cd4 receptors on the t4 cell, thus preventing the HIV virus from infecting the cell. Credit: Bill Branson (photographer).

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-I) enters the T-lymphocyte where the virus loses its outer envelop, releasing its RNA and its reverse transcriptase. The reverse transcriptase builds a complimentary DNA strand from the viral RNA template. The DNA helix is inserted into the host genome. When this is transcribed by the infected cell, the new viral RNA and proteins are produced to form new viruses that then bud from the cell membrane, thus completing the life cycle of the virus. For reasons not completely understood, in some years the anti-cyclone is less powerful than normal. The weaker winds it produces fail to draw cold waters up to the ocean's surface, thus opening the way for warm, nutrient-poor tropical waters. These changes in water temperature and climatic conditions are known as "El Nino". Credit: Fisheries.

Currents and Temperature - Atlantic waters enter the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar and flow east along the North African coast, becoming more saline as evaporation exceeds freshwater inflows. Thus, the Mediterranean is mor e saline than the Atlantic. Strong temperature, salinity, and available nutrien t gradients lead to high biodiversity reflected by regional faunal differences. Roy's Dam is in Lagunitas Creek, CA and suffered from a non-functioning fish ladder. Fish were attracted to the current and did not attempt to get up the ladder. Thus, the ladder impaired their spawning migration. This image shows the dam and ladder before restoration. Credit: NOAA Restoration Center.
