In plane geometry, a square is a polygon with four equal sides and equal angles. Those angles are then necessarily right angles. Squares are regular quadrilaterals.
The coordinates for the vertices of a square centered at the origin and with side length 2 are (±1, ±1), while the interior of the same consists of all points (x0, x1) with -1 < xi < 1.

In algebra, the square of x is written x2 and is defined as the product of x with itself: x × x. If x is a positive real number, the value of x2 is equal to the area of a (geometric) square of edge length x. If y = x2 and x≥0, then x is the square root of y.

A positive integer that is the square of some other integer is known as a square number, or more simply a square.
In urban planning, a square is a planned open area in a city, usually or originally square in shape. See Red Square, Tiananmen Square, Times Square and Trafalgar Square for examples. Some are permanently or on certain days of the week used for an open market.
In carpentry, a square is a guide for establishing right angles (ninety-degree angles), usually made of metal and in the shape of a right triangle.
In the geometry narrative Flatland, A Square is the name of the main narrator of the story.
In video games, Square is short for Squaresoft.
In the parlance of jazz, a square was a person who failed to appreciate the medium, i.e. one who was out of date or out of touch. The term has persisted and permeated into mainstream cultures, as exemplified in Elvis Costello's hit Hip to be square, which, in ultimate self-reference, was used by Sesame Street to illustrate the geometrical meaning of "square".

In mathematics, a square number, sometimes also called a perfect square, is a positive integer that can be written as the square of some other integer. So for example, 9 is a square number since it can be written as 3×3. By convention, the first square number is 1. The number m is a square number if and only if one can arrange m points in a square:
1:
+ x4:
x + x x + + x x9:
x x + x x x x x + x x x + + + x x x16:
x x x + x x x x x x x + x x x x x x x + x x x x + + + + x x x x25:
x x x x + x x x x x x x x x + x x x x x x x x x + x x x x x x x x x + x x x x x + + + + + x x x x xThe formula for the nth square number is n2. This is also equal to the sum of the first n odd numbers, as can be seen in the above pictures, where a square results from the previous one by adding an odd number of points (marked as '+'). So for example, 52 = 25 = 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9.
A square number is also the sum of two consecutive triangular numbers.
Lagrange's four-square theorem states that any positive integer can be written as the sum of at most 4 perfect squares. 3 squares are not sufficient for numbers of the form 4k(8l + 7). This is generalized by Waring's problem.
A positive integer that has no perfect square divisors except 1 is called square-free.

A square wave is a kind of basic waveform. Ideally a square wave has instantaneous alternation between a maximum and a minimum (which can be zero or negative) amplitude level.
A bandlimited square wave pictured in the time domain (top) and frequency domain (bottom). The fundamental is at 220 Hz (A2).
Origins and uses
Square waves are universally encountered in digital switching circuits. In musical terms, it is often described as sounding hollow, and is therefore used as the basis for wind instrument sounds created using subtractive synthesis.
Examining the square wave
In contrast to the sawtooth wave, which contains all integer harmonics, the square wave contains only odd integer harmonics.Using Fourier series we can write an ideal square wave as an infinite series of the form
A curiosity of the convergence of the Fourier series representation of the square wave is the Gibbs phenomenon. Ringing artifacts in non-ideal square waves can be shown to be related to this phenomenon. Gibbs phenomenon can be prevented by the use of σ-approximation, which uses the Lanczos sigma factors to help the sequence converge more smoothly.
An ideal square wave requires that the signal changes from the maximum to the minimum state cleanly and instantaneously. This is impossible to achieve in real-world systems, as it would require infinite bandwidth.
Real-world square-waves have only finite bandwidth, and often exhibit ringing effects similar to those of the Gibbs phenomenon, or ripple effects similar to those of the σ-approximation.
For a reasonable approximation to the square-wave shape, at least the fundamental and third harmonic need to be present, with the fifth harmonic being desirable. These bandwidth requirements are important in digital electronics, where finite-bandwidth analog approximations to square-wave-like waveforms are used. (The ringing transients are an important electronic consideration here, as they may go beyond the electrical rating limits of a circuit).
The ratio of the high to low periods of a square wave are called the duty cycle. A true square wave has a 50% duty cycle - equal high and low periods. The average level of a square wave is also given by the duty cycle, so by varying the on to off periods, it is possible to represent any value between the two limiting levels. This is the basis of pulse width modulation.

Squaresoft (often just called Square) is a Japanese video game company that was created in 1983 as a part of a software development firm called Denyuusha.
In 1985, Squaresoft began making games for the Nintendo Famicom (called the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America and Europe). Their early games were not very successful, and by 1987 the company was facing the possibility of going out of business. However, that same year, Squaresoft employee Hironobu Sakaguchi was given a chance to make a game that would either make or break the company. He named his creation Final Fantasy, a console role-playing game that revolved around four sacred crystals, one for each of the four elements in the fantasy world. Final Fantasy did much better than Sakaguchi had ever hoped, in both Japan and the U.S; the game was followed by a sequel in 1988, marketed exclusively in Japan until Final Fantasy Origins. Squaresoft has made nine other Final Fantasy games since, and has become a defining force in the role-playing genre.
Square has also made other games such as Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, Threads of Fate (a.k.a. DewPrism), Vagrant Story, and Kingdom Hearts (with Disney Interactive). The company's Square Pictures division also made a CGI movie based on Final Fantasy called Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in 2001.
Square agreed to merge with Enix (another Japanese company best known for its popular Dragon Quest series) in 2002 so as to curb development costs and become more competitive. In April of 2003 the merger was completed, forming the new company, Square Enix. =Softography=
