Computing | Fence n. 1. A sequence of one or more distinguished (out-of-band) characters (or other data items), used to delimit a piece of data intended to be treated as a unit (the computer-science literature calls this a `sentinel'). The NUL (ASCII 0000000) character that terminates strings in C is a fence. Hex FF is also (though slightly less frequently) used this way. See zigamorph. 2. An extra data value inserted in an array or other data structure in order to allow some normal test on the array's contents also to function as a termination test. For example, a highly optimized routine for finding a value in an array might artificially place a copy of the value to be searched for after the last slot of the array, thus allowing the main search loop to search for the value without having to check at each pass whether the end of the array had been reached. 3. [among users of optimizing compilers] Any technique, usually exploiting knowledge about the compiler, that blocks certain optimizations. Used when explicit mechanisms are not available or are overkill. Typically a hack: "I call a dummy procedure there to force a flush of the optimizer's register-coloring info" can be expressed by the shorter "That's a fence procedure". Source: Jargon File. |
Aerospace | 1. A line of readout or tracking stations for pickup of signals from an orbiting satellite. 2. A line or network of radar or radio stations for detection of a satellite in orbit.3. Bible | Fence (Heb. gader), Num. 22:24 (R.V.). Fences were constructions of unmortared stones, to protect gardens, vineyards, sheepfolds, etc. From various causes they were apt to bulge out and fall (Ps. 62:3). In Ps. 80:12, R.V. (see Isa. 5:5), the psalmist says, "Why hast thou broken down her fences?" Serpents delight to lurk in the crevices of such fences (Eccl. 10:8; comp. Amos 5:19). Dream Interpretation | To dream of climbing to the top of a fence, denotes that success will crown your efforts. To fall from a fence, signifies that you will undertake a project for which you are incapable, and you will see your efforts come to naught. To be seated on a fence with others, and have it fall under you, denotes an accident in which some person will be badly injured. To dream that you climb through a fence, signifies that you will use means not altogether legitimate to reach your desires. To throw the fence down and walk into the other side, indicates that you will, by enterprise and energy, overcome the stubbornest barriers between you and success. To see stock jumping a fence, if into your enclosure, you will receive aid from unexpected sources; if out of your lot, loss in trade and other affairs may follow. To dream of building a fence, denotes that you are, by economy and industry, laying a foundation for future wealth. For a young woman, this dream denotes success in love affairs; or the reverse, if she dreams of the fence falling, or that she falls from it. Source: Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted .... |

A fence is a freestanding structure designed to restrict or prevent movement across a boundary. Generally distinguished from a wall by the solidity of construction - a wall is usually restricted to such barriers made from solid brick or concrete, blocking vision as well as passage (though the definitions do overlap somewhat). There are fences constructed for several different purposes:
Some of the technologies developed for fencing include
- agricultural fencing
- security fencing
- decorative fencing
Alternatives for a fence are a hedge or a ditch (with or occasionally without water).
- barbed wire
- electric fencing
- post-and-rail fencing
- rock wall fencing
A fence is a person who specializes in the purchase and sale of stolen property from thieves.
In statistics, the word \'fence' refers to a value beyond which an observation is considered an outlier.
