In algebraic geometry, the algebraic variety was the classical object of study. An affine algebraic variety was an irreducible algebraic set in some affine space, over an algebraically closed field K. It therefore was given by a co-ordinate ring that was an integral domain, a quotient of a polynomial ring over K by a prime ideal. A projective algebraic variety was the closure in projective space of an affine variety. These definitions were good enough to support the geometry of 1950.In foundational changes forced on algebraic geometry for technical reasons, there were some more abstract definitions made. An abstract algebraic variety would be a particular kind of locally ringed space, namely such that every point has a neighbourhood, as ringed space, of type Spec(R) (spectrum of a ring) with R the co-ordinate ring of an affine algebraic variety of the kind discussed in the first paragraph. This definition had the big advantage of allowing varieties which were complete, in the sense of algebraic geometry, but not given as projective varieties (which are complete, but now that became an intrinsic concept). For example an abelian variety could be defined as a connected group object in the category of complete varieties.
These varieties have been called 'varieties in the sense of Serre', since Serre's foundational paper FAC on sheaf cohomology was written for them. They remain typical objects to start studying in algebraic geometry, even if more general objects are also used in an auxiliary way.
One way that leads to generalisations to allow reducible algebraic sets (and fields K that aren't algebraically closed), so the rings R may not be integral domains. This is not a big step technically. More serious is to allow nilpotents in the sheaf of rings. A nilpotent in a field must be 0: these if allowed in co-ordinate rings aren't seen as co-ordinate functions.
From the categorical point of view, nilpotents must be allowed, in order to have finite limits of varieties. Geometrically this says that fibres of good mappings may have 'infinitesimal' structure. In the theory of schemess of Grothendieck these points are all reconciled: but the general scheme is far from having the immediate geometric content of a variety.

In mathematics the meaning of variety can be
or
- in algebraic geometry, an algebraic variety, which may be affine, projective or abstract

A variety is a recognised division of a species. In most usages the terms variety, subspecies and race are interchangeable. See particularly subspecies, which is the technical term.
In the order Crocodylia, for example, the Common Caiman Caiman crocodilus is represented by four varieties, the Bespectacled Caiman Caiman crocodilus crocodilus, the Brown Caiman Caiman crocodilus fuscus, the Rio Apaporis Caiman Caiman crocodilus apaporiensis and the Yacare Caiman Caiman crocodilus yacare. Each of these has a distinct range of habitat and appearance, and different varieties do not normally interbreed in the wild. They are however sufficiently closely related that interbreeding is possible and produces viable, fertile offspring, or hybrids, so are regarded as a single species.
Often the scientific name of a variety will be given with the genus and species names abbreviated, for example C. c. fuscus for the Brown Caiman. See also binomial nomenclature. If the species name is important in the context, then only the genus name will be abbreviated, as in C. crocodilus fuscus.
A domesticated variety of a plant is called a cultivar, while a domesticated variety of an animal is called a breed. A strain is all the descendants of a single significant ancestor, and is sometimes used interchangeably with 'variety' but this is not strictly correct. A strain of animals is also called a bloodline.

A variety of a language is a variant that differs from another variety systematically and coherently. "Variety" is a wider concept than style of prose or style of language.Examples of varieties are:
Varieties, such as dialects, idiolects and sociolects, can by distinguished not only by their vocabulary, but also by differences in grammar, phonology and prosody. For instance can melodic accent be differently performed in different dialects; or foreign words in different sociolects can be more or less adapted to the basic phonology of the language.
- dialects, i.e. varieties spoken by geographically defined speech communities
- sociolects, i.e. varieties spoken by socially defined speech communities
- standard language, standardized for education and public performance
- idiolects, i.e. a variety particular for a certain person
- technical terminology, or jargon, with vocabulary or grammatical distinctions important in certain activities or professions
In certain professional jargons it might be useful to make distinctions of grammar, that are not in regular use outside of the jargon. For instance might journalists or lawyers be more prone to use grammatical moods such as subjunctive mood or conditional mood also in languages where these are considered foreign or archaic by other speakers.
It's a matter of definition whether slang and argot are to be considered included in the concept variety or in that of style. Colloquialisms and idiom are usually understood as limited to variation of lexicon, and hence of style.
