Missing Persons
The number of missing people grew to estimates as high as over 6000 in the months following the attack, but steadily declined as stories were checked and duplicate entries removed. (See Timeline of WTC missing).

Victim legends
Due to the very large number of World Trade Center casualties and missing persons, victim legends were a common form of September 11, Terrorist Attack urban legends. These were tales of victims who did not exist, spread by word-of-mouth and the Internet. Official sites, such as http://www.september11victims.com, contain accurate entries and are trusted content. Because Wikipedia, and many other websites allowed freely adding victims, there were no doubt many obvious fake entries. Fake victims added to these lists were often simply missing at the time of the attacks, or actually survivors of the attacks.

Quaternions are used in computer graphics and related fields because they allow for a compact representations of rotations in 3D space. This will be explained in this article.
Introduction
Every quaternion z = a + bi + cj + dk can be viewed as a sum a + u of a real number a (called the "real part" of the quaternion) and a 3-vector u = (b, c, d) = bi + cj + dk in R3 (called the "imaginary part"). In this view, quaternions are "mixed sums" of scalars and 3-vectors and the quaternions i, j and k correspond to the unit vectors i, j and k.
Two such quaternions are added by adding the real parts and the imaginary parts separately:
The multiplication of quaternions translates into the following rule:
- (a + u) + (b + v) = (a + b) + (u + v)
Here, <u,v> denotes the scalar product and u×v the vector product of u and v.
- (a + u) (b + v) = (ab - <u,v>) + (av + bu + u×v)
This formula shows that two quaternions z and w commute, i.e. zw = wz, if and only if their imaginary parts are real multiples of each other (because in this case the vector product of these imaginary parts will commute).
It is well known that the vector product is related to rotation in space. The goal then is to find a formula which expresses rotation in 3-d space using quaternion multiplication, similar to the formula for a rotation in 2-d using complex multiplication:
where z = exp(iα) is used for rotation by an angle α.
- f(w) = zw
The formula in 3-d cannot be a simple multiplication with a quaternion, because multiplying a vector with a non-trivial quaternion yields a result with non-zero real part, and thus not a vector. Rotating a vector should yield a vector however.
It turns out that we can cancel the real part if we multiply by a quaternion from one side and with its inverse from the other side. Let z = a + u be a non-zero quaternion, and consider the function
where z-1 is the multiplicative inverse of z and v is a vector, considered as a quaternion with zero real part. The function f is known as conjugation by z. Note that the real part of f(v) is zero, because in general zw and wz have the same real part for any quaternions z and w, and so
- f(v) = z v z-1
Furthermore, f is a R-linear and we have f(v) = v if and only if v and the imaginary part u of z are real multiples of each other (because f(v) = v means v z = z v). Hence f is a rotation whose axis of rotation passes through the origin and is given by the real multiples of v.
- Re(z v z-1) = Re(v z-1 z) = Re(v 1) = 0.
Note that conjugation with z is the same as conjugation with rz for any real number r. We can thus restrict our attention to the quaternions of absolute value 1, the so-called unit-quaternions. (The absolute value |z| of the quaternions z = a + v is defined as the square root of a2 + ||v||2. It is multiplicative: |zw| = |z| |w|.) Inverting unit quaternions is especially easy: if |z| = 1, then z-1 = z* (the conjugate z* of the quaternion z = a + v is defined as z* = a - v) and this makes our rotation formula even easier.
It turns out that the angle of rotation α is also easy to read off if we are dealing with a unit quaternion z = a + v: we have cos(α/2) = a. To summarize:
The composition of two rotations corresponds to quaternion multiplication: if the rotation f is represented by conjugation with the quaternion z and the rotation g is represented by conjugation with w, then the composition fog is represented by conjugation with zw.
- A rotation in 3-d with axis v and angle α can be represented as conjugation with the unit quaternion z = cos(α/2) + sin(&alpha/2)v/||v|| (or with any real multiple of z).
If one wishes to rotate about an axis that doesn't pass through the origin, then one first translates the vectors into the origin, conjugates, and translates back.
An example
Let us consider the rotation f around the axis u = i + j + k, with an angle of 120°, i.e. 2π/3 radians.
The length of u is √3, the half angle is π/3 with cosine 1/2 and sine (√3)/2. We are therefore dealing with a conjugation by the unit quaternion z = (1 + i + j + k)/2.
Concretely:
which using the ordinary rules for quaternion arithmetic can be simplified to
- f(ai + bj + ck) = z (ai + bj + ck) z*
as expected.
- ci + aj + bk
Quaternions vs. other representations of rotations
The representation of a rotation as a quaternion (4 numbers) is more compact than the representation as a matrix (9 numbers). Furthermore, for a given axis and angle, one can easily construct the corresponding quaternion, and conversely, for a given quaternion one can easily read off the axis and the angle. Both of these are much harder with matrices or Euler angles.
In computer games and other applications, one is often interested in "smooth rotations", meaning that the scene should slowly rotate and not in a single step. This can be accomplished by choosing a curve in the quaternions, with one endpoint being the identity transformation 1 and the other being the intended total rotation. This is more problematic with other representations of rotations.
When composing several rotations on a computer, rounding errors necessarily accumulate. A quaternion that's slightly off still represents a rotation -- a matrix that's slightly off need not be orthogonal anymore and therefore need not represent a rotation at all. It is hard to turn such a matrix back into a proper orthogonal one.

This article is being rewritten to conform to the Wikipedia elements format. The new article is being prepared at Uranium/Temp. Please make any new changes there. Uranium is a heavy, naturally radioactive (with unstable isotopes), metallic element, in the periodic table uranium has the symbol U and atomic number 92. Its melting point is 1132°C, its density 19050 kg/m3.Uranium metal has three allotropic forms:
Its two principally occurring isotopes are 235U and 238U. The isotope 235U is important for both nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons because it is the only isotope existing in nature to any appreciable extent that is fissile, that is, fissionable by thermal neutrons. The isotope 238U is also important because it absorbs neutrons to produce a radioactive isotope that subsequently decays to the isotope 239Pu (plutonium), which also is fissile.
- alpha (orthorhombic) stable up to 667.7°C
- beta (tetragonal) stable from 667.7 C to 774.8°C
- gamma (body-centered cubic) from 774.8°C to melting point - this is the most malleable and ductile state.
The artificial 233U isotope is also fissile and is made from 232thorium by neutron bombardment.
Uranium was the first element that was found to be fissile, i.e. upon bombardment with slow neutrons, its 235U isotope becomes the very short lived 236U, that immediately divides into two smaller nuclei, liberating energy and more neutrons. If these neutron are absorbed by other 235U nuclei, a nuclear chain reaction occurs, and if there isn't anything to absorb some neutrons and slow the reaction, it is explosive. The first atomic bomb worked with by this principle (nuclear fission). A more accurate name for both this and the hydrogen bomb (nuclear fusion) would be "nuclear weapon", because only the nuclei participate.
Some Important Materials Containing Uranium
Uraninite is the most common ore of uranium.
Yellowcake is uranium concentrate. It takes its name from the color and texture of the concentrates produced by early mining operations, despite the fact that modern mills using higher calcining temperatures produce "yellowcake" that is dull green to almost black. Yellowcake typically contains 70 to 90 percent uranium oxide (U3O8) by weight.
Ammonium diuranate is an intermediate product in the production of yellowcake, and is bright yellow in colour. It is sometimes confusingly called "yellowcake" but this is not a standard name.
Uranium ore is rock containing uranium mineralization in concentrations that can be mined economically, typically 1 to 4 pounds of uranium oxide per ton or 0.05 to 0.20 percent uranium oxide.
Uranium tetrafluoride (UF4) is known as "green salt" and is an intermediate product in the production of uranium hexaflouride.
Uranium hexafluoride (UF6) is a white solid which forms a vapor at temperatures above 56 degrees Centigrade. UF6 is the compound of uranium used for the two most common enrichment processes, gaseous diffusion enrichment and centrifuge enrichment. It is simply called "hex" in the industry.
Enriched uranium is uranium in which the 235U isotope concentration has been increased to greater than the 0.711 percent 235U (by weight) currently present in most natural uranium. Uranium with less than 0.711 percent U-235 has been found in the area of Oklo in Africa.
Depleted uranium or "DU" is uranium in which the 235U isotope concentration has been decreased to less than 0.711 percent. It is a waste product from the enrichment process, and is used in aircraft counterweights and in munitions.
Historical Background (at least the US version)
Uranium was discovered in 1789 by the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth as part of the mineral called pitchblende. It was named after the planet Uranus, which had been discovered eight years earlier.
In the Manhattan Project the names tuballoy and oralloy were used to refer to natural uranium and enriched uranium respectively. These names are still used occasionally to refer to natural or enriched uranium.
The exploration and mining of radioactive ores in the United States began around the turn of the 20th century. Sources for radium (contained in uranium ore) were sought for use as luminous paint for watch dials and other instruments. Uranium became important for defense purposes during World War II. In 1943, the Union Mines Development Corporation operated mills in Colorado to process uranium ore for the Manhattan Project, which applied atomic power to military use. To ensure adequate supplies of uranium for national defense, Congress passed the U.S. Atomic Energy Act of 1946, creating the Atomic Energy Commission. Military requirements declined in the 1960s, and the Government completed its uranium procurement program by the end of 1970. Simultaneously, a new market emerged - commercial nuclear power plants.
Statistics:
Owners and operators of U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors purchased from U.S. and foreign suppliers a total of 21,300 tons of uranium deliveries during 2001. The average price paid was $26.39 per kilogram of uranium, a decrease of 16 percent compared with the 1998 price.
In year 2001, the U.S. produced 1,018 tons of uranium from 7 mining operations, all of which are west of the Mississippi River.
Uranium is distributed worldwide, especially by the French. Generally, large countries produce more uranium than smaller ones because the worldwide distribution or uranium is very roughly uniform. Australia has extensive uranium deposits making up approximately 30% of the world's known uranium reserves.
Uranium contamination in food and soil is a problem in some areas. Uranium is not particularily rare; it is more common than tungsten, beryllium, or gold. This same problem also exists with thorium, which is much more abundant.
