An opening and mixing machine, which delivers the material in a suitable state for carding. It has one ore two swifts traditionally of 30-to 40-in. diameter, which rotate at between 160 and 180 rev/min. Over the swifts are fitted two, three, or four sets of workers and strippers similar to those on a carding machine. If these are clothed with tenterhook teeth and are gear-driven, the workers precede the strippers. If, however, the strippers have leather wings and straight teeth and are running at high speed.
