Specialty Definition: Cogency

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

An argument is cogent if, and only if, supposing the premises all to be true, then the conclusion is probably (but not necessarily) true. (Exactly what "probably" means is a matter of considerable debate.)

Suppose you have an argument in which the premises make the conclusion very probably true, but not necessarily true; it might still be a good argument. Such an argument we call cogent; cogency (that is the noun) is of central importance to inductive logic. Here, for example, is a cogent argument:

There is a barrel jammed full of ordinary marbles, of different colors.
Without looking, Jill pulled out 100 marbles from various holes in the lid; 95 of the marbles Jill pulled out were red.
Therefore, the next marble Jill pulls out, without looking, from another hole in the lid, will be red.

This appears to be a cogent argument. That means that if the two premises are true, then probably the conclusion is true; for all we know, the next marble might not be red, but it probably will be. Notice this: maybe there is no barrel, or maybe all of the marbles were blue; in that case, both premises of the above argument would be false. But that would not matter to the claim that this argument is cogent. If the argument is cogent, then supposing the premises to be true, the conclusion is probably true. Like validity, cogency is a conditional property.

Also like validity, the cogency of an argument can be assessed by examining the form of the argument. Consider, for example, the form of the above argument. We might say it follows something like this pattern:

95% of observed F's were G.
Therefore, probably, the next F observed will also be G.

Nearly any argument that follows the above will be cogent. There are some complications that we are ignoring here; for example, suppose we were working with a deck containing 100 cards, and we know in advance that five of them are special cards called "jesters." All the other cards are called "royalty." Then, suppose it is true that 95% of drawn cards were royalty; in that case, the five cards that are left are jesters. In that case, the premise would lead one conclude that the next observed card will not be royalty--exactly the opposite of what the argument form would explain. Exactly what sort of complications are necessary are studied by inductive logic. We would need to mention background assumptions, random sample, having a large enough sample size, and so forth. So bear in mind that the argument form above is a simplification for purposes of illustration.

Just as one adds true premises to a valid argument to get soundness, you can add true premises to a cogent argument to get a strong argument. We can define strength, for arguments, as follows:

An argument is strong if, and only if, the argument is cogent and all of its premises are true.

Similar things to what one says about soundness can be said about strength. If one knows an argument is strong, then one knows that, if the premises are true, then its conclusion is probably true.

Strength of materials

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Strength of materials is the study of strength and elastic behaviour of engineering materials. Strength is considered in terms of compressive strength, tensile strength, and shear strength.

Tensile stress is a loading that tends to produce stretching on a material by the application of axially directed pulling forces. Materials can withstand some tensile loading, but if enough force is applied, they will eventually break into two parts. Steel is an example of a material with high tensile strength.

Compressive strength is the capacity of a material to withstand axially directed pushing forces. When the limit of compressive strength is reached, materials are crushed. Concrete can be made to have high compressive strength.

Shear stress is caused when a force is applied to produce a sliding failure of a material along a plane that is parallel to the direction of the applied force.

Ultimate strength is an attribute directly related to a material, rather than just specific specimen of the material, and as such is quoted force per unit of cross section area (). For example, Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of mild steel is . It is useful to remember that .

Factor of Safety is a designed constraint that an engineered component or structure must achieve. FS = UTS/f. For example to achieve a factor of safety of 4, a the allowable stress on a mild steel component can be worked out as .

Strong (grammatical term)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

An "irregular" inflection, in which the stem of a word changes. Opposite: weak

Examples

Strong verbs display ablaut.

Origin of the term

The term strong was coined with reference to the Germanic languages, but has since been used of some languages from other families whose inflections have similar characteristics.

"Strong" versus "irregular"

In the Germanic languages, a strong verb is one with an internal vowel change in the past or preterite tense. Strictly speaking, this is not the same thing as an irregular verb, since strong verbs follow certain patterns (more visible in the older Germanic languages that have larger numbers of them), and an irregular verb does not necessarily involve any vowel change (for example, "have" - "had" is irregular but not strong, while "ought" is defective, because it exists in only one tense).

Adjectives and nouns

A strong adjective or noun is defined according to the stem of the declension, and is not directly related to the notion of a strong verb; strong adjectives and nouns do not exist in modern English.

Strong cardinal

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In mathematics, a cardinal number κ is called strong iff for all ordinal numbers λ there exists an elementary embedding j : VM from V into a transitive inner model M with critical point κ and VλM. κ is called λ-strong iff there exists an elementary embedding j : VM from V into a transitive inner model M with critical point κ and VλM; thus, κ is strong iff it is λ-strong for all λ.

It should be noted that the least strong cardinal is larger than the least Woodin, superstrong, etc. cardinals, but that the consistency strength of strong cardinals is lower: For example, if κ is Woodin, then Vκ is a model of "ZFC + there is a proper class of strong cardinals".

Strong interaction

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The strong nuclear force or strong interaction is a fundamental force of nature which affects only quarks, antiquarks, and gluons. This force is responsible for binding quarks together to form hadrons (including protons and neutrons), and the residual effects also bind these neutrons and protons together in the nucleus of the atom. See particle physics for an overview of the theory.

According to quantum chromodynamics, every quark carries color charge which comes in three types: "red", "green" and "blue". These are just names and not related to ordinary colors in any way. Antiquarks are either "anti-red", "anti-green" or "anti-blue". Like colors repel, unlike colors attract. The attraction between a color and its anti-color is especially strong. Particles can only exist if their total color is neutral, meaning that they can either be composed of a red, green and blue quark (such a particle is called a baryon; protons and neutrons are examples), or of a quark and an anti-quark having the corresponding anti-color (such a particle is called a meson).

The strong interaction acts between two quarks by exchanging particles called gluons. There are eight types of gluons, each carrying a color charge and an anti-color charge.

As pairs of quarks interact, they constantly change their color, but in such a way that the total color charge is conserved. If say a red quark is attracted to a green quark inside a baryon, a gluon carrying anti-green and red color is emitted from the red quark and absorbed by the green quark; as a result the first quark switches to green and the second to red (total color charge remains green + red). If a blue quark and a anti-blue antiquark interact inside a meson, a gluon carrying for example anti-red and blue could be emitted by the blue quark and absorbed by the anti-blue one; as a result the blue quark turns red and the anti-blue antiquark turns anti-red (total color charge remains 0). Two green quarks repel each other by exchanging a gluon carrying green and anti-green color; the quarks remain green.

Unlike the other fundamental forces, the strong interaction also acts on the strong exchange particles themselves, since gluons carry color charge. This leads to a very limited range of the strong interaction (not much farther than the hadron's radius) even though the gluon does not have mass. It also has the strange effect that the force gets stronger as the distance between the quarks increases. This effect prevents free quarks from being observed. As the distance between two quarks increases, the amount of energy in the force between them increases. If the force becomes strong enough, there is enough energy to create new quarks. This is the reason that one only sees quarks in pairs or triplets and never individually. The textbook allegory is that of a rubber band. When the rubber band is stretched far enough, the band breaks and you have two new rubber bands. Similar with quarks: separate the quark pair far enough, and two new quarks will pop up.

The phenomenon of not being able to separate quarks, is called confinement. It is conjectured as the quarks are moved really close, the quarks no longer interact via the strong interaction, and become `free' - this is called asymptotic freedom. The allegory of the rubber band holds here too. Move the ends of the band close together, and they do not `feel' each other.
