Speed is the rate of motion expressed as distance moved per unit time. Speed is a scalar; the equivalent vector quantity is known as velocity.
Units of speed include:
1 m.s-1 = 3.6 km.h-1
- metre per second (symbol m.s-1), the SI derived unit
- kilometre per hour, km.h-1
- mile per hour
- knot (nautical miles per hour)
- Mach, where Mach 1 is the speed of sound; Mach n is n times as fast.
1 mph = 1.609 km.h-1 1 knot = 1.852 km.h-1 = 0.514 m.s-1. Mach 1 = ca. 1200 km.h-1 = ca. 330 m.s-1; Speed is also:
- slang for amphetamines
- an American film: see Speed (movie).

Speed is a film starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock (her breakout role), and Dennis Hopper.Written by Graham Yost, the story is about an Los Angeles police officer (Reeves) who has to stop a insane bomber/extortionist (Hopper) who has rigged a bomb on a public transit bus. The bomb has multiple triggers, including one that will detonate if the bus goes slower than 50 mi/h (80 km/h). The cop and a young woman (Bullock) struggle to keep the bus moving at an acceptable speed despite the congested traffic of the city while the police search for the bomber.
There is a sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control, which is set on a cruise ship. Sandra Bullock reprises her role.
The Speed movies were parodied by the Father Ted episode "Speed 3", in which Father Dougal McGuire is trapped on a milk float with a bomb that will detonate if the float goes slower than 4 mi/h (6.4 km/h).

Velocity is a vector measurement of the rate and direction of motion. The scalar absolute value (magnitude) of velocity is speed. Velocity can also be defined as rate of change of displacement.
In both mechanics the average speed v of an object moving a distance d during a time interval t is described by the simple formula:
The instantaneous velocity vector v of an object whose position at time t is given by x(t) can be computed as the derivative
- v = d/t.
Acceleration is the change of an object's velocity over time. The average acceleration of a of an object whose speed changes from vi to vf during a time interval t is given by:
- v = dx/dt.
The instantaneous acceleration vector a of an object whose position at time t is given by x(t) is
- a = (vf - vi)/t.
The final velocity vf of an object which starts with velocity vi and then accelerates at constant acceleration a for a period of time t is:
- a = d2x/(dt)2
The average velocity of an object undergoing constant acceleration is (vf + vi)/2. To find the displacement d of such an accelerating object during a time interval t, substitute this expression into the first formula to get:
- vf = vi + at
When only the object's initial velocity is known, the expression
- d = t(vf + vi)/2
can be used. These basic equations for final velocity and displacement can be combined to form an equation that is independent of time:
- d = vit + (at2)/2
The above equations are valid for both classical mechanics and special relativity. Where classical mechanics and special relativity differ is in how different observers would describe the same situation. In particular, in classical mechanics, all observers agree on the value of 't' and the transformation rules for position create a situation in which all non-accelerating observers would describe the acceleration of an object with the same values. Neither is true for special relativity.
- vf2 = vi2 + 2ad
The kinetic energy (movement energy) of a moving object is linear with both its mass and the square of its velocity:
The kinetic energy is a scalar quantity.

Lexicography | Devil's Dictionary | FEMALE, n. One of the opposing, or unfair, sex. The Maker, at Creation's birth, With living things had stocked the earth. From elephants to bats and snails, They all were good, for all were males. But when the Devil came and saw He said: "By Thine eternal law Of growth, maturity, decay, These all must quickly pass away And leave untenanted the earth Unless Thou dost establish birth" -- Then tucked his head beneath his wing To laugh -- he had no sleeve -- the thing With deviltry did so accord, That he'd suggested to the Lord. The Master pondered this advice, Then shook and threw the fateful dice Wherewith all matters here below Are ordered, and observed the throw; Then bent His head in awful state, Confirming the decree of Fate. From every part of earth anew The conscious dust consenting flew, While rivers from their courses rolled To make it plastic for the mould. Enough collected (but no more, For niggard Nature hoards her store) He kneaded it to flexible clay, While Nick unseen threw some away. And then the various forms He cast, Gross organs first and finer last; No one at once evolved, but all By even touches grew and small Degrees advanced, till, shade by shade, To match all living things He'd made Females, complete in all their parts Except (His clay gave out) the hearts. "No matter," Satan cried; "with speed I'll fetch the very hearts they need" -- So flew away and soon brought back The number needed, in a sack. That night earth range with sounds of strife -- Ten million males each had a wife; That night sweet Peace her pinions spread O'er Hell -- ten million devils dead! G.J. |
