Southbridge is a town located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,878.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²). 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 12,878 people, 5,336 households, and 3,286 families residing in the town. The population density is 947.1/km² (2,452.7/mi²). There are 5,720 housing units at an average density of 420.7 persons/km² (1,089.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 83.15% White, 1.45% African American, 0.43% Native American, 1.82% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 10.37% from other races, and 2.72% from two or more races. 23.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,336 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 38.4% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.99. In the town the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $31,745, and the median income for a family is $38,865. Males have a median income of $34,842 versus $23,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,104. 18.4% of the population and 15.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.1% are under the age of 18 and 12.5% are 65 or older.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.0 km² (20.9 mi²). 52.7 km² (20.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.40% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 17,214 people, 7,077 households, and 4,522 families residing in the town. The population density is 326.4/km² (845.4/mi²). There are 7,511 housing units at an average density of 142.4 persons/km² (368.9 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.23% White, 1.43% African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.52% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 8.70% from other races, and 2.63% from two or more races. 20.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,077 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 36.1% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.98. In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $33,913, and the median income for a family is $41,863. Males have a median income of $36,008 versus $25,685 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,514. 15.4% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.8% are under the age of 18 and 10.2% are 65 or older.
