Mining

Slang for either natural gas or a gasoline contaminated with odor-causing sulfur compounds. In natural gas the contaminant is usually hydrogen sulfide, which can be removed by passing the gas mixture through carbonate solutions containing special metal or organic activators. In gasolines, the sour contaminents are usually mercaptans, which are removed in the doctor treatment or by ethylene oxide with a phenolic catalyst. Theimproved gas or gasoline is known as sweet gas.
