Health

To define what sounds can damage hearing, sound level, whether across all frequency bands or taken band by band, is not enough. (references)

Those results, however, were taken to indicate that a halving of duration could be offset by a 5-dB change in sound level rather than a 3-dB change. (references)

There appears to be reasonable agreement that sound levels below 75 dB(A) will not engender a permanent hearing loss, even at 4000 Hz. At higher levels, the amount of hearing loss is directly related to sound level for comparable durations. (references)
