Specialty Definition: Angel of Death (song)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Angel of Death is a famous, and controvertial, song by the band Slayer. The song is based on Josef Mengele. This in itself - a metal band writing about war and a serial killer - would not have raised many eyebrows, the controversy arose over the lack of condemnation in the lyrics.

The song was written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who as well as having a German-sounding name, is also blonde - facts which added to the controversy surrounding the song.

The song arose through Hanneman's interest in Nazi Germany. Like many other musicians (including Ozzy Osbourne and Motorhead's Lemmy), Hanneman collected Nazi memoribilia. His interest began when his father, who had fought in World War 2 (for America), gave him a German medal.

Those criticising the song generally tended to overlook the fact that both Tom Araya, Slayer's vocalist, and Dave Lombardo, the band's then drummer, are of distinctly non-Aryan heritage.

The band addressed the criticisms in "Behind the Crooked Cross", a song from South of Heaven.

The song has appeared in other places since. It has been on the soundtracks of Gremlins 2 and Jackass: The Movie. The half-time riff was sampled by Public Enemy in their song "She Watch Channel Zero"

Peaches (song)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The song 'Peaches' by The Stranglers was one of the big summer hits of 1977, a close rival to The Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen in terms of notoriety. Because of the dubious nature of the lyrics, the B-side Go Buddy Go was the song played on UK radio at the time.

Song is also a Chinese family name represented by the character 宋. A song is a relatively short musical composition for the human voice (possibly accompanied by other musical instruments), which features words (lyrics). The words are typically of a poetic, rhyming nature, although they may be religious verses or free prose. Songs can be broadly divided into many different forms, depending on the criteria used. A common division is between "art songs" and "folk songs", the latter being of anonymous origin and culturally associated. Other common methods of classification are by purpose (sacred vs secular), by style (dance, ballad, lieder, etc.) or by time of origin (Renaissance, Contemporary, etc). The performer of a song is called a "singer" or "vocalist", the act is called singing.

Art songs are songs created for performance in their own right, usually with piano accompaniment, although they can also have other types of accompaniment such as an orchestra or string quartet. Generally they are defined as having an identified author(s) and require serious voice training. The German word for song, "Lied" (plural: "Lieder"), is used in French and English-speaking communities to refer to the serious art song, whereas in German-speaking communities the word "Kunstlied" (plural: "Kunstlieder") is used to distinguish art song from folk song ("Volkslied").

Art songs feature in many cultures, including but not limited to: Russian (romansy), Dutch (lied), Italian (canzoni), French (mélodies), Scandinavian (sånger), Spanish (canciones).

Folk songs are songs of anonymous origin that are transmitted orally. They are frequently a major aspect of national or cultural identity. Art songs often become folk songs when people forget who the author was. Folk songs are also frequently transmitted non-orally (that is, as sheet music), especially in the modern era.

Commercium songs are songs are traditional academic songs, that are usually being sung during commerciums, see Commercium songs.

Song Dynasty (960-1279)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

This article discusses the Song Dynasty in the 10th century. Refer to Song Dynasty (420-479) for the first of the four Southern dynasties of China.

The Song Dynasty (宋朝 960-1279) followed the Period of the Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms and preceded the Yuan Dynasty in China. The period is divided into the Northern Song (960-1127) in which the Song controlled both Northern and Southern China and when the capital was in Kaifeng, and the Southern Song (1127-1279) in which the Song lost control of Northern China to the Liao Dynasty (later replaced by the Jin dynasty) and retreated south of the Yangtze River to form its capital at Hangzhou. Because Chinese diplomatic theory did not recognize relations between equal states, the Southern Song was technically a tributary state of the northern dynasty.

The founders of the Song dynasty built an effective centralized bureaucracy staffed with civilian scholar-officials. Regional military governors and their supporters were replaced by centrally appointed officials. This system of civilian rule led to a greater concentration of power in the emperor and his palace bureaucracy than had been achieved in the previous dynasties.

The Song dynasty is notable for the development of cities not only for administrative purposes but also as centers of trade, industry, and maritime commerce. The landed scholar-officials, sometimes collectively referred to as the gentry, lived in the provincial centers alongside the shopkeepers, artisans, and merchants. A new group of wealthy commoners--the mercantile class-- arose as printing and education spread, private trade grew, and a market economy began to link the coastal provinces and the interior. Landholding and government employment were no longer the only means of gaining wealth and prestige.

Culturally, the Song refined many of the developments of the previous centuries. Included in these refinements were not only the Tang ideal of the universal man, who combined the qualities of scholar, poet, painter, and statesman, but also historical writings, painting, calligraphy, and hard-glazed porcelain. Song intellectuals sought answers to all philosophical and political questions in the Confucian Classics. This renewed interest in the Confucian ideals and society of ancient times coincided with the decline of Buddhism, which the Chinese regarded as foreign and offering few practical guidelines for the solution of political and other mundane problems.

The Song Neo-Confucian philosophers, finding a certain purity in the originality of the ancient classical texts, wrote commentaries on them. The most influential of these philosophers was Zhu Xi (1130-1200), whose synthesis of Confucian thought and Buddhist, Taoist, and other ideas became the official imperial ideology from late Song times to the late nineteenth century. As incorporated into the examination system, Zhu Xi's philosophy evolved into a rigid official creed, which stressed the one-sided obligations of obedience and compliance of subject to ruler, child to father, wife to husband, and younger brother to elder brother. The effect was to inhibit the societal development of premodern China, resulting both in many generations of political, social, and spiritual stability and in a slowness of cultural and institutional change up to the nineteenth century. Neo-Confucian doctrines also came to play the dominant role in the intellectual life of Korea, Vietnam, and Japan.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

"Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is an early 20th century Tin Pan Alley song which became the unofficial anthem of baseball. The song is traditionally sung during the seventh-inning stretch of a baseball game. Between the first, or "top" and second, or "bottom" halves of the seventh inning, fans are invited to stand and stretch their legs, and sing along.

The words were written in 1908 by Jack Norworth who spotted a sign that said "Ballgame Today at the Polo Grounds" while riding a New York City subway train. Some baseball-related lyrics popped into his head, which were later set to some music by Albert Von Tilzer. Neither Norworth nor Von Tilzer had ever been to a baseball game at the time the song was written. The song was introduced in vaudeville acts, and became a popular hit of the era.

Among those particularly associated with the song is Chicago Cubs television announcer Harry Caray, who led the singing at games in Wrigley Field from 1981 through 1997.

The Verses to the song are no longer often heard, but the chorus continues to be very familiar to most people in the United States.

Full Lyrics

Verse:

Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names.
You could see her there ev'ry day,
Shout "Hurray" when they'd play.
Her boy-friend by the name of Joe
Said, "To Coney Isle, dear, let's go",
Then Nelly started to fret and pout,
And to him, I heard her shout:

Chorus:
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out to the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back.
For it's root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For it's (shout) ONE, TWO, THREE strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game.

Second Verse:
Nelly Kelly was baseball mad
Had the fever and had it bad
Just to root for the home town crew
Every sou Nelly blew
On the Saturday her young beaux
Called to see if she'd like to go
To see a show
But Miss Nell said "No,
I'll tell you what you can do:"

(repeat Chorus)

Third Verse:

Nelly Kelly was sure some fan,
She would root just like any man,
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along, good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Nelly Kelly knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the game sing this song:

(repeat Chorus)

Note: Sometimes "Cracker Jack" is pluralized, "never" is replaced with "ever", and "For" is replaced with "'Cause". The name "Katie Casey" is sometimes substituted for "Nelly Kelly".

Lexicography

Devil's Dictionary

MAIDEN, n. A young person of the unfair sex addicted to clewless conduct and views that madden to crime. The genus has a wide geographical distribution, being found wherever sought and deplored wherever found. The maiden is not altogether unpleasing to the eye, nor (without her piano and her views) insupportable to the ear, though in respect to comeliness distinctly inferior to the rainbow, and, with regard to the part of her that is audible, bleating out of the field by the canary -- which, also, is more portable. A lovelorn maiden she sat and sang -- This quaint, sweet song sang she; "It's O for a youth with a football bang And a muscle fair to see! The Captain he Of a team to be! On the gridiron he shall shine, A monarch by right divine, And never to roast on it -- me!" Opoline Jones

SpeakerPhrase(s)

Barry Manilow

Very catchy song. What I had fun doing was building it, starting it really little and building it and changing the key and adding the orchestra and giving it a big ending. I like that.

You know, I wrote a song about why I wear black but maybe that's not quite it. I wear black because I'm comfortable in it. But then in the summertime when it's hot I'm comfortable in light blue.

Nancy Sinatra

Written by Lee Hazelwood, arranged by Billy Strange. I personally felt they could have put out the track and they would have had a hit with that, because the track is what sells the song.

Paul McCartney

Well, you know, I'm still looking to write a great song. You always are. You know, you never think, well that's enough. Well, that's good enough.

Tim McGraw

They're the best. They put a movie in three minutes. So far I haven't been able to bring myself to put myself on that level to put a song on record.
