A wood or metal structure built over a weather-deck opening to afford light and ventilation to the spaces below. The top covers are flat or pitched and are provided with hinges. From the point of view of the submariner, thin places in the ice canopy, usually less than 1 m thick and appearing from below as relatively light, translucent patches in dark surroundings.
