Statistics

This is a very elastic term, e. g. (1)size of a sample means the total number of sample units in the sample, usually with multiple counting of repeated sample units in sampling with replacement. In multi-stage sampling the size must have reference to the stage of sampling, but it sometimes stands for the size of the ultimate sample, i. e. the total number of ultimate sample units taken up for detailed inquiry; (2)sometimes the size of a stratum is used to mean the number of units constituting the stratum; and similarly the size of a primary unit stands definitely for the number of second stage units constituting the primary unit; but(3)the size of a stratum of sampling units, primary or otherwise, etc. , may sometimes be measured in several ways. Thus, the size of a village may stand for its population, area, or something similar. Source: European Union. (references)

Specialty Definition: Block size (cryptography)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In modern cryptography, symmetric key ciphers are generally divided into stream ciphers and block ciphers. Block ciphers operate on a fixed length string of bits. The length of this bit string is the block size. Both the input (plaintext) and output (ciphertext) are the same length; this is more-or-less required by the Pigeonhole principle, and the fact that the cipher must be invertible.

Until the announcement of NIST's AES contest, the majority of block ciphers followed the example of the DES in using a block size of 64 bits (8 bytes). However the Birthday paradox tells us that after accumulating a number of blocks equal to the square root of the total number possible, there will be an approximately 50% chance of two or more being the same, which would start to leak information about the message contents. Thus even when used with a proper encryption mode, only B = 32 GB of data can be safely sent under one key. In practice we want odds a lot better than 50%, so we are restricted to much less data - say a few hundred megabytes. Once that seemed like a fair amount of data, but today it is easily exceeded. (If the cipher mode does not properly randomise the input, the limit is even worse).

Consequently AES candidates were required to support a block length of 128 bits (16 bytes). This should be acceptable for up to B = 256 exaBytess of data. That should be enough for quite a few years to come.

A few block ciphers, such as RC5, actually support a variable block size, while Joan Daemen's 3-Way has a 96 bit block.

The Luby-Rackoff construction and the Outerbridge construction can both increase the effective block size of a cipher.

Dimension

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

simple:Dimension

Dimension (from Latin "measured out") is, in essence, the number of degrees of freedom available for movement in a space. (In common usage, the dimensions of an object are the measurements that define its shape and size. That usage is related to, but different from, what this article is about.)

For example, the space in which we live appears to be 3-dimensional. We can move up, north or west, and movement in any other direction can be expressed in terms of just these three. Moving down is the same as moving up a negative amount. Moving northwest is merely a combination of moving north and moving west.

Some theories predict that the space we live in has in fact many more dimensions (frequently 10, 11 or 26) but that the universe measured along these additional dimensions is subatomic in size. See string theory.

Time is frequently referred to as the "fourth dimension"; time is not the fourth dimension of space, but rather of spacetime. This does not have a Euclidean geometry, so temporal directions are not entirely equivalent to spatial dimensions. A tesseract is an example of a four-dimensional object.

For 3-D images see Stereoscopy.

For 3-D films and video see 3-D.

In mathematics, we find that no definition of dimension adequately captures the concept in all situations where we would like to make use of it. Consequently, mathematicians have devised numerous definitions of dimension for different types of spaces. All, however, are ultimately based on the concept of the dimension of Euclidean n-space E n. The point E 0 is 0-dimensional. The line E 1 is 1-dimensional. The plane E 2 is 2-dimensional. And in general E n is n-dimensional.

In the rest of this article we examine some of the more important mathematical definitions of dimension.

Hamel Dimension

For vector spaces, there is a natural concept of dimension, namely the cardinality of a basis. See Hamel dimension for details.

Manifolds

A connected topological manifold is locally homeomorphic to Euclidean n-space, and the number n is called the manifold's dimension. One can show that this yields a uniquely defined dimension for every connected topological manifold.

Lebesgue covering dimension

For any topological space, the Lebesgue covering dimension is defined to be n if any open cover has a refinement (a second cover where each element is a subset of an element in the first cover) such that no point is included in more than n+1 elements. For manifolds, this coincides with the dimension mentioned above.

Hausdorff dimension

For sets which are of a complicated structure, especially fractals, the Hausdorff dimension is useful. The Hausdorff dimension is defined for all metric spaces and, unlike the Hamel dimension, can also attain non-integer real values.

Hilbert spaces

Every Hilbert space admits an orthonormal basis, and any two such bases have the same cardinality. This cardinality is called the dimension of the Hilbert space. This dimension is finite if and only if the space's Hamel dimension is finite, and in this case the two dimensions coincide.

Krull dimension of commutative rings

The Krull dimension of a commutative ring is defined to be the maximal length of a strictly increasing chain of prime ideals in the ring.

More dimensions to be added later

Lexicography

Devil's Dictionary

MAGNITUDE, n. Size. Magnitude being purely relative, nothing is large and nothing small. If everything in the universe were increased in bulk one thousand diameters nothing would be any larger than it was before, but if one thing remain unchanged all the others would be larger than they had been. To an understanding familiar with the relativity of magnitude and distance the spaces and masses of the astronomer would be no more impressive than those of the microscopist. For anything we know to the contrary, the visible universe may be a small part of an atom, with its component ions, floating in the life- fluid (luminiferous ether) of some animal. Possibly the wee creatures peopling the corpuscles of our own blood are overcome with the proper emotion when contemplating the unthinkable distance from one of these to another.
