Christian symbolism, besides incorporating much of the early symbolism of Judaism, rapidly developed figures of religious significance peculiar to itself.
Influences
The religious symbolism of Christianity consists of various references to metaphorical figures found in Biblical and Christian teaching, to events and artifacts found in the Bible, or to the history and acts of worship in the Church, as these are interpreted in Christian tradition, within Christian theology, or folk-religion. These symbols may be pictoral figures, metaphorical emblems or literary allusions, geometric shapes, or colors with specific meaning in the context of Christian art or worship. Also common in Christian religious symbolism are emblems, figures or ideas drawn from the cultures into which Christianity has been insinuated, so that symbols existing in those cultures have been adopted but embued with Christian meaning. The phoenix standing for the Resurrection, or the Egg representing rebirth, are examples of this incorporation of pagan symbols, for use in Christian art and customs.
Diverse influences and meaning illustrated
The Christmas tree may be an interesting example of both streams of influence, converging together. Offering an explanation of these streams of meaning may illustrate how the interpretation of symbols is somewhat arbitrary and free.On the one hand, trees that remain green in the winter have been symbolic of life in the midst of death, and of rebirth, in many cultures. The Christian folk-religious custom of erecting and adorning evergreen trees in the middle of winter was borrowed directly from existing practice, regardless of whether the custom had pagan roots. Some of the existing meaning has been carried over into Christian culture, together with these practices.
On the other hand, trees appear with symbolic meaning throughout the Bible: and the Christmas tree alludes to and builds upon this biblical symbolism. From the symbolic tree of knowledge of good and evil, concerning which the Fall of man and the curse of death came, to the tree of life from access to which mankind has been cut off, to the Oak of Mamre which "witnessed" the covenant made with Abraham and the renewal of that covenant with Joshua, to promises concerning the root of Jesse, the Branch, the Messiah, who was hung on a tree to bear the curse, and has been raised up again as a tree of life for the healing of the nations: the Christian story can be told from beginning to end in the symbolic terms of trees.
To focus on one stream of the development of this late Christian symbol, the Christmas tree symbolizes, in part, the promised "Branch", the Messiah, who must be the "Root of Jesse", the descendant prefigured by Jesse's royal son, David. The tree symbolizes the human geneaology of Jesus and especially his tie to David's royal line through Solomon, which had been perplexingly cut off by God from ever inheriting the throne, after Jeconiah. This connection to the cut-off line is symbolized by the cut-down tree, and is indirectly a symbol of the Son of God. According to Christian tradition, although a descendant of Nathan on his mother's side, Jesus is an heir of Solomon on his supposed father's side. In other words, if Joseph were in fact Jesus's father, then Jesus cannot be the Messiah, because Joseph is descended from Jeconiah, the cut-off line.
But through his mother, the genealogy of Jesus satisfies the promise of the Messiah in terms of human descent, and this is symbolized by the erect tree. It is an evergreen, because of his eternal origin as God, according to Christian belief. And yet, the tree is also customarily cut down before it is decorated, symbolizing that Jesus is also an heir of the line of Solomon by adoption, through Joseph. So, Christians think that God's word was miraculously fulfilled through the virgin birth, because in that way, the Branch came from the cut-off line of Jesse by adoption, and also by the living line of Jesse. By the birth of Jesus, the promise concerning Jesse's line has been fully fulfilled, Christians believe, and in this restoration Adam's line, all mankind, redeemed from futility and death, is symbolized. And that is why the Christmas tree is cut down, but restored erect, evergreen and clothed in light, in symbolic commemoration of the virgin birth.
However, this is only one of many explanations of this symbol, and not by any means the most common one. Not only the symbol itself, but also the meaning of the symbol is accounted for and explained in manifold and sometimes contradictory ways, according to various particular traditions. This flexibility and diversity in accounting for the history and meaning should be kept in mind, when considering any Christian symbol.

A signature is a usually stylized version of someone's name written on documents as a proof of identity, like a seal but handwritten.
Text automatically appended to E-mail and Newsgroup messages, usually including a name, contact info, and sometimes quotes and ASCII Art, is also called a signature.
A signature can be referred to in many ways, including the term "John Hancock", after the first of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Signatures are also known as autographs, particularly in the context of autograph collecting.

Signs (2002) is a film by M. Night Shyamalan starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix.Gibson plays an Episcopalian minister who "has been shut down by a devastating life experience." Although the plot revolves around crop circles, its producer, Frank Marshall, said, "It's really about human emotions set in motion by a supernatural event." Shyamalan, who plays a neighbor in the film, was inspired by The Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Birds.
Caution: WIKIPEDIA CONTAINS SPOILERS: (This means that Wikipedia plot summaries give away major plot points.)
The film is about a rural family that lives on a farm. The father, played by Gibson, is a former Episocopalian minister who has lost his faith after his wife is killed in a horrific accident by a drunk driver. No longer practicing religiously, he lives with his brother, played by Joaquin Phoenix, and his young daughter and son. Things are fairly steady in life until a mysterious crop circle appears in his corn field. Its origin and purpose is unknown. Some in the town speculate that it may be a prank; a few believe that it may have been created by intelligent alien lifeforms.
Throughout the film we learn that his daughter has a peculiar aversion to water that isn't freshly from the faucet; she constantly says things like "the water is contaminated", and is always asking for a fresh glass of water, leaving behind half-consumed glasses of water around the house (or whatever dwelling she happens to be in.)
As the story progresses, it is clear that Gibson's farm is under watch, and he and his brother chase a dimly seen person who was spying on them at night from the roof of their farm. The being disappears into the crops, moving faster and disappearing far easier than anyone can explain. Soon Gibson's character is shocked to learn that similar crop circles have suddenl appeared all around the world, in ways too similar and created too quickly to merely be a hoax.
As the movie progresses, we see more televised news reports of crop citings around the world, followed by citings of presumed alien beings. This is followed by a citing of numnerous UFOs (unidentified flying objcts), presumed to be of alien origin. The sitution turns dangerous when the UFO's suddenly become invisible; due to birds flying into them and falling, however, the government and news agencies are certain that they still are there.
The movie picks up its pace when Gibson visits the home of the man who accidentally killed his wife (her last words were for him to tell his brother to "swing away.") The wounded doctor's enigmatic discussion expresses regret for killing Gibson's wife, his theories about what his happening, and the cryptic but terrifying last line "I locked one in the kitchen closet". Upon investigating, Gibson indeed finds something intelligent and alive locked in the man's kitchen closet, only dimply seen in the reflection of a knifeblade. When it lunges for him Gibson cuts off one of the intruder's fingers.
Gibson returns home with the news that the entire world is now under attack from alien invaders. There is no safe place to hide. Gibson and his family board up their house. The aliens invade his home, but he hides in the basement with his family and manages to not be caught. In the basement, his young son has a serious asthma attack when he is nearly caught by an alien.
The next morning they return upstairs to discover their house ransacked. The local news reports that the aliens invaded the whole world, kidnapping people by gassing them. It is never explained what their purpose was, but the director (M. Nigh Shyamalan) has suggested that they were harvesting humans for food. At this point in the film, all of the aliens appear to have left the planet; humans have discovered that water harms the aliens. The aliens have even left their wounded behind. Before they can celebrate, the alien whom Gibson mutilated earlier appears and takes his son into his arms. It sprays from its arm a poisonous gas, which we now understand to be the way that it attacks and incapacitates people.
Phoenix, a former baseball player, begins to attack the alien with a bat (Gibson tells him to "swing away." The alien falls backwards into a half-full glass of water that the daughter left out, and it burns through his flesh and kills it. They discover that because of the asthma attack, the son's lungs were closed off and the gas did not penetrate. Gibson regains his faith because he feels that the messages from his dying wife was sent to her by God in order to save the life of their son.

Lexicography | Devil's Dictionary | SEAL, n. A mark impressed upon certain kinds of documents to attest their authenticity and authority. Sometimes it is stamped upon wax, and attached to the paper, sometimes into the paper itself. Sealing, in this sense, is a survival of an ancient custom of inscribing important papers with cabalistic words or signs to give them a magical efficacy independent of the authority that they represent. In the British museum are preserved many ancient papers, mostly of a sacerdotal character, validated by necromantic pentagrams and other devices, frequently initial letters of words to conjure with; and in many instances these are attached in the same way that seals are appended now. As nearly every reasonless and apparently meaningless custom, rite or observance of modern times had origin in some remote utility, it is pleasing to note an example of ancient nonsense evolving in the process of ages into something really useful. Our word "sincere" is derived from sine cero, without wax, but the learned are not in agreement as to whether this refers to the absence of the cabalistic signs, or to that of the wax with which letters were formerly closed from public scrutiny. Either view of the matter will serve one in immediate need of an hypothesis. The initials L.S., commonly appended to signatures of legal documents, mean locum sigillis, the place of the seal, although the seal is no longer used -- an admirable example of conservatism distinguishing Man from the beasts that perish. The words locum sigillis are humbly suggested as a suitable motto for the Pribyloff Islands whenever they shall take their place as a sovereign State of the American Union. |
