Specialty Definition: Nigel Short

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Nigel Short (born June 1, 1965) is an English chess player. In 1993 he played Garry Kasparov for the Professional Chess Association World Chess Championship, losing 12.5 - 7.5. He had won matches against former world champion Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman on his way to meeting Kasparov.

One of Short's best tournament results came at the Amsterdam VSB tournament in 1991 when he tied for first place with Valery Salov ahead of both Kasparov and Karpov. In April 2003 he won the Hunguest Hotels Super Chess Tournament held in Budapest ahead of Boris Gelfand, Judit Polgar and Peter Leko among others (Polgar and Leko were in the world's top ten at the time).

In recognition of his chess accomplishments, he was awarded the honorary OBE (Order of the British Empire) title.

In the October 2003 FIDE rating list, Short was ranked number 17 in the world with an Elo rating of 2701, making him England's number two (behind Michael Adams).

Short circuit

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A short circuit is a fault in electrical apparatus whereby electrical current is allowed to flow between a phase and the electrical earth or between two phases.

Short circuits are usually caused when a breakdown of insulation occurs, or when a conducting medium, such as water allows current to flow.

Short circuits can cause significant damage to electrical installations, which are normally protected by fuses, circuit breaker or other overload protection. In computer programming, short circuiting is a method of evaluating boolean expressions in which only the first argument of the '\'and and or operators is evaluated if this is sufficient to determine the value overall. In the case of and, if the first argument is false, the whole expression is false, and the second argument is not evaluated. In the case of or'', if the first argument is true, the whole expression is true, and the second argument is not evaluated. Not only may this eliminate expensive computation in the second argument, but it allows a style of programming where the first argument first checks a condition without which the second argument may cause a run-time error.

Short Parliament

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The Short Parliament (April - May 1640) of King Charles I is so called because it lasted only three weeks.

Charles recalled Parliament in 1640, after eleven years of attempting to rule without one. He was forced to call the Short Parliament primarily to obtain money to finance his military struggle with Scotland in the Bishops' Wars. Like its predecessors, the new parliament had greater interest in redressing perceived grievances occasioned by the royal administration. Charles's attempt to cease the levying of Ship Money did not impress the Members of Parliament. Impatient with their thoroughgoing ways, Charles dissolved the body (5 May 1640) after only three weeks' sitting. It would be followed by the Long Parliament.

EPIGRAM, n. A short, sharp saying in prose or verse, frequently characterize by acidity or acerbity and sometimes by wisdom. Following are some of the more notable epigrams of the learned and ingenious Dr. Jamrach Holobom: We know better the needs of ourselves than of others. To serve oneself is economy of administration. In each human heart are a tiger, a pig, an ass and a nightingale. Diversity of character is due to their unequal activity. There are three sexes; males, females and girls. Beauty in women and distinction in men are alike in this: they seem to be the unthinking a kind of credibility. Women in love are less ashamed than men. They have less to be ashamed of. While your friend holds you affectionately by both your hands you are safe, for you can watch both his.
