 A. A deformation resulting from stresses that cause or tend to cause contiguous parts of a body to slide relatively to each other in a direction parallel to their plane of contact. It is the mode of failure of a body or mass whereby the portion of the mass on one side of a plane or surface slides past the portion on the opposite side. In geological literature the term refers almost invariably to strain rather than to stress. It is also used to refer to surfaces and zones of failure by shear, and to surfaces along which differential movement has taken place b. See:shearing c. To make vertical cuts in a coal seam that has been undercu. (references)

Weather

Variation in wind speed (speed shear) and/or direction (directional shear) over a short distance. Shear usually refers to vertical wind shear, i.e., the change in wind with height, but the term also is used in Doppler radar to describe changes in radial velocity over short horizontal distances. Specialty Definition: Shear

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Shear is a form of structural failure. A component fails by shearing when it splits into two parts that slide past each other.

In mathematics, a shear is a particular kind of linear mapping. For a vector space V and subspace W, a shear fixing W translates all vectors parallel to W. To be more precise, if V is the direct sum of W and W', and we write vectors as v = w + w' correspondingly, the typical shear is L where L(v) = w + (w' + M(w')) where M is a linear mapping from W' into W. Therefore in matrix terms L can be represented as 2x2 , with blocks on the diagonal I, with M above the diagonal, and 0 below.

In clothing design, fabric may be cut on the shear. This is done by placing the patterns at 45 degrees to the weave of the fabric. Clothing cut on the shear is less stiff and follows the shape of the wearer's body more closely than clothing cut parallel to the weave.

In the foreground are improvised shear legs and purchase for handling guns, carriages and other heavy weights removed from the wrecks. This arrangement was used both in landing materials and later in embarking it on USS Monongahela for transit home. The bow of the German gunboat Eber is at left, by the shear legs. USS Trenton is in the center, with the sunken USS Vandalia alongside. Vandalia's smokestack has been removed to replace that of USS Nipsic, which is probably the ship in the right distance.
