Specialty Definition: SEPARATIVE WORK UNIT

DomainDefinition

Nuclear Energy & Physics

Enrichment is considered a service as it takes customer feed, separates the isotopes and returns it. This service is not measured by amount of product, but by the amount of work necessary for the separation. The unit used called a Separative Work Unit(SWU)is related to the amount of work necessary to increase the isotopic content in kilograms. The capacities of plants are given by the amount of SWU per year they can supply. Another unit, tonne SWU or te SWU, refers to 1000 SWU. Source: European Union. (references)
