The Savanna covers about 8,000,000 hectares, of which around 1,500,000 hectares are non-irrigated grain cultures (operating only during the rainy season, i.e., from October to March). (references)

This fact is mostly due to the increase of irrigated coffee plantations in the Savanna area. To alleviate this problem, the Brazilian Government is conducting a study on new customs laws to facilitate the imports of irrigation equipment. (references)

An example of this is the coffee plantations located in the southern region which represent an average output of 18 bags/hectare, while the irrigated coffee plantations in the Savanna have been achieving about 60 bags/hectare of high quality coffee. (references)
