A salad is generally a mixture of uncooked vegetables, often lettuce or tomato. Other foods such as pasta, cooked potatoes, rice, croutons, meat (eg bacon) or fish (tuna) are sometimes added to salads.
Some sort of dressing is often added such as vinaigrette or mayonnaise, as well as herbs.
Types of salad:
Some salads carry the name of their origin:
- Caesar
- Mesclun
- Niçoise
- Italian salad
- Greek salad
A fruit salad is a number of sliced, peeled fruits served in their own juices or with a dressing.

The word vinaigrette can refer to:
- An emulsion of vinegar (or sometimes lemon juice) and vegetable oil, often flavored with herbs, spices, and other ingredients. Vinaigrettes are used as sauces in many cuisines, and as salad dressings. This is the most common use of the word.
- A small container with a perforated top, used to contain an aromatic substance such as vinegar or smelling salts (also called a vinegarette).
- A bath chair.
