In botany, roots form the portions of a plant which generally lie below the level of the soil. Roots normally have a tendency to grow downward in order to reach more nutrients and water which the plant needs to survive.

In mathematics, a root (or a zero) of a function f is an element x in the domain of f such that f(x)=0.Consider the equation . 3 is then called a root of f, because f(3)=0.
If the function is mapping from real numbers to real numbers, its zeros are essentially where its graph hits the x-axis.
A substantial amount of mathematics was developed in order to find roots of various functions, especially polynomials. The roots of a quadratic equation could be given by the quadratic formula, and the study of the roots of polynomials of degree 3 led to the discovery of complex numbers.
Many real polynomials don't have a real number as a root, but the Fundamental theorem of algebra states that every polynomial of degree n has n complex roots, counted with their multiplicities.
One of the most important unsolved problems in mathematics concerns the location of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function.
Compare with the concept of a pole.
A root can also describe a number in the form x1/a, such as the square root.

Roots, released 1996 was the last album released by Sepultura with Max Cavalera.
While still including the hardcore punk influenced sound that featured on Chaos A.D, Roots also incorporated a slower, detuned Korn influenced sound. (Ironically, Korn attributed part of their sound to their admiration of the slow sections in earlier Sepultura songs). Jonathan Davis of Korn also provided vocals on the song "Lookaway".
However, the most important innovation in Roots was the experiments fusing thrash metal with the music of Brazil's indigenous peoples. The band incorporated these elements into almost all songs in the album, and one of them ("Itsari") was actually recorded with the members of the Xavantes tribe at their ancestral home in Mato Grosso, Brazil.
Roots was a very influential album on the sound of nu metal bands who came later. Along with Jonathan Davis, Mike Patton of Faith No More and DJ Lethal, later of Limp Bizkit, also contributed to "Lookaway".
The lyrics to "Attitude" were co-written by Dana Wells, Max Cavalera's step son, whose death (in part) lead to the events which caused Max to leave the band. Dana also came up with the concept for the video for the song, featuring the Gracie family.
