RADIOSONDE

Specialty Definition: RADIOSONDE

DomainDefinition

Aerospace

An instrument, usually balloon-borne, for the simultaneous measurement and transmission of meteorological data while moving vertically through the atmosphere. See dropsonde. The instrument consists of transducers for the measurement of pressure, temperature, and humidity; a modulator for the conversion of the output of the transducers to a quantity which controls a property of the radiofrequency signal; a selector switch which determines the sequence in which the parameters are to be transmitted; and a transmitter which generates the radiofrequency carrier. (references)

Science

A balloon-borne instrument that measures meteorological parameters from the Earth's surface up to 20 miles in the atmosphere. The radiosonde measures temperature, pressure, and humidity, and transmits or 'radios' these data back to Earth. Upper air winds also are determined through tracking of the balloon ascent. Radiosonde observations generally are taken twice a day (0000 and 1200 UTC) around the globe. NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) operates a network of about 90 radiosonde observing sites in the U.S. and its territories. When the balloons burst, radiosondes return to Earth on a parachute. Approximately 25 percent are recovered and returned to NWS for reconditioning and reuse. (references)

Solar

An instrument package that moves through the atmosphere, usually attached to a balloon, and transmits data over a radio frequency. (references)

Weather

A balloon-borne instrument for the simultaneous measurement and transmission of meteorological data up to a height of approximately 30,000 meters (100,000 feet). The height of each pressure level of the observation is computed from data received via radio signals. (references)

Specialty Definition: Radiosonde

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A radiosonde is a unit for use in weather balloons that measures various atmospheric parameters and transmits them to a fixed receiver. A frequency band at 403 MHz is reserved for radiosondes.

The weight of a radiosonde is typically 250 gramss. A major manufacturer is Vaisala in Finland.
