Specialty Definition: PULMONARY VENTILATION

DomainDefinition

Health

The total volume of gas per minute inspired or expired measured in liters per minute. (references)

Medicine

The mass movement of gas in and out of the lungs. The pulmonary ventilation is mainly regulated so as to provide the gaseous exchange required for aerobic energy metabolism. Some gaseous exchange does take place through the skin, and some gas is lost in the urine and other secretations, but the volume of gas thus exchanged is negligible. Source: European Union.
