Computing

Plotter A device that uses one or more pens that can be raised, lowered and moved over the printing media to draw graphics or text. The heart of the plotter is the printer head assembly, consisting of a horizontal bar and, attached to it, the head assembly holding the pen in use. The pen can be positioned horizontally by moving the pen assembly along the bar. Vertical positioning is achieved by either moving the bar (stationary page plotter) or the paper (rolling page plotter). Combinations of horizontal and vertical movement are used to draw arbitrary lines and curves in a single action, in contrast to printers which usually scan horizontally across the page. Colour plots can be made by using more than one pen. Older plotters required a separate pen for each colour and the pens had to be changed by hand. Modern colour plotters usually use only four pens (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, see CMYK) and need no human intervention to change them. Monochromatic plotters have been largely phased out by laser printers except when large paper size is needed, e.g. in CAD. (1996-01-10). Source: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing.

Occupations

Locates and marks frames of motion picture film to identify film segments for optical effects processing: Reads work order or optical effects specifications sheets to ascertain optical effects specifications and location of subject material on original photography film. Mounts single or multiple rolls of film on spindles of winding device, locates marked start frame of film, and aligns start frame in start position of synchronizer-counter device to locate and identify film frames specified for optical effects. Turns crank on winding device to advance film and observes film passing over viewing light box to detect damage or unclean condition. Cleans film using cleaning solutions and velvet cloth. Repairs minor damage, such as torn sprocket holes, using tape. Periodically stops film when viewing more than one roll simultaneously and compares numbers printed on film edges to ensure synchronization of films. Stops film when counter reading matches number indicated on work order for start of first optical effect. Reviews subject matter within film frame and compares to description on work order to ensure match when work order does not include reference numbers. Marks reference frame of film, using film notcher, tape, or other marking device to indicate optical effect starting point. Marks symbols and numbers on film edge or leader to indicate type of effect and length. Advances film to additional reference frames indicated, and marks designated frames to show reference points within individual optical effects. Prepares count sheet indicating position, length, and type of optical effects required for films which do not have prepared specification sheets. Splices strips of leader material to film, and assembles designated segments of film in specified relationship, using splicing device. May confer with clients regarding optical effects requirements and production problems. May determine artwork requirements and requisition artwork. May review and approve finished optical effects. May load and unload film from camera magazine, and mount and remove magazines from camera. May change subtitle cards when filming subtitles. (references)

Specialty Definition: Plotter

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A plotter is a vector graphics printing device that connects to a computer.

Plotters print their output by moving a pen across the surface of a piece of paper. This means that plotters are restricted to line art, rather than raster graphics as with other printers. They can draw complex line art, including text, but do so very slowly because of the mechanical movement of the pens.

Another difference between plotters and printers is that a printer is aimed primarily at printing text. This makes it fairly easy to control, simply sending the text to the printer is usually enough to generate a page of output. This is not the case of the line art on a plotter, where a number of printer control languages were created to send the more detailed information like "draw a line from here to here". The most popular of these is likely HPGL.

Early plotters were created by attaching ball-point pens to drafting pantographs and driving the machines with motors controlled by the computer. This had the disadvantage of being somewhat slow to move, as well as requiring floor space equal to the size of the paper. Later versions worked by placing the paper over a roller which moved the paper back and forth for X motion, while the pen moved back and forth on a single arm for Y motion. Another change was the addition of an electrically-controlled clamp to hold the pens, which allowed them to be changed and thus create multi-colored output.

For a time in the 1980s smaller "home-use" plotters became popular for experimentation in computer graphics. But their low speed meant they were not useful for general printing purposes, and you would need another conventional printer for those jobs. With the widespread availability of high-resolution inkjets and laser printers, plotters have all but disappeared.

Plotters are used primarily in drafting and CAD applications, where they have the advantage of working on very large paper sizes while maintaining high resolution. Another use has been found by replacing the pen with a cutter, and in this form plotters can be found in many garment and sign shops.
