Specialty Definition: Pita

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

One might be looking for peta. Pita (also called pitta or pita bread) is a round flat wheat bread made with yeast. It is traditional in many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. Pita is used to scoop sauces or dips such as hummus and to wrap sandwiches such as gyros. Most pita breads are baked at high tempatures causing the flattening rounds of dough to puff up dramatically. Once removed from the oven, pita then flattens but the baked dough remains seperated inside. This allows pita bread to be sliced and opened into pockets, allowing various ingredients to be stuffed inside. Pita is also the working name of an electronic musician, Peter Rehberg, who co-runs the Mego record label.
