Economic History

Australia

The one-time consumption effects of the GST aside, 2000 also saw a cyclical decline in domestic demand, brought about by a tightening of monetary policy by the Reserve Bank of Australia during late 1999-mid 2000. The Reserve Bank lifted rates during a period of exceptionally strong growth as a pre-emptive strike against inflationary pressures and an expanding external deficit, but by early 2001 had lowered rates to their previous levels in an effort to kick-start the housing sector and perk up domestic demand generally.
