A performance is an event in which generally one group of people (the performer or performers) behave in a particular way for the benefit of another group of people (the viewer or viewers, or audience). Sometimes the dividing line between performer and audience is blurred, as in the example of "participatory theatre" where audience members might be involved in the theatrical event.Examples of perfomance genres include:
Performances might take place daily, or at some other regular interval.
- play
- opera
- operetta
- ballet and other types of dance
- musical
- circus acts
Similar activties can take place in a religious or occult setting whereby the performance becomes a ritual. In a scientific setting, the carrying out of predetermined actions in a controlled environment is the performance of an experiment.
A music performance is called a concert or a recital. It may be indoors in a concert hall or outdoors in a field, and people may be required to be very quiet, or they may be able to sing and dance along with the music. In a street concert by one or more street musicians, often the public consists of people who happen to pass by; paying is not compulsory, but welcomed.
Similarly street performances are carried out by other street artists, e.g. performing acrobatics. The same applies in other public places.
The word is also used to describe the 'performance' of an actor(ess), or artiste in such a production. Or in a solo capacity; such as a mime artist, comedian, conjurer, etc.

Performance art is art where the actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time in front of an audience constitute the work. It can happen anywhere, at any time, or for any length of time. Another way of understanding this is to say that performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience. It is opposed to painting or sculpture, for example, where an object constitutes the work.

Larger version
Although performance art could be said to include relatively mainstream activities such as theater, dance, music, and circus-related things like fire breathing, juggling, and gymnastics, these are normally instead known as the performing arts. Performance art is a term usually reserved to refer to a kind of usually avant garde or conceptual art which grew out of the visual arts.
Performance art, as the term is usually understood, began to be identified in the 1960s with the work of artists such as Allan Kaprow, who coined the term happenings, Vito Acconci, Hermann Nitsch and Joseph Beuys. Western cultural theorists often trace performance art activity back to the beginning of the 20th Century. Dada for example, provided a significant progenitor with the unconventional performances of poetry, often at the Cabaret Voltaire, by the likes of Richard Huelsenbeck and Tristan Tzara. Some performance artists point to other traditions, ranging from tribal ritual to sporting events. Performance art activity is not confined to European art traditions; many notable practitioners can be found among Asian, Latin American, Third World and First Nations artists.
Genres or strains of performance art include body art, fluxus, action poetry, and intermedia. Some artists prefer to use the terms live art, action art, intervention or manoeuvre to describe their activities.
Sniggling is an activist, prankish form of public performance art, which is typically done in a form in which it is not immediately obvious that a piece of deliberate performance is being delivered.

Many competing theories have been advanced to discover the possible connections between sleep and learning in humans. One theory is that sleep consolidates and optimizes the layout of memories. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation leads to impaired consolidation of both declarative and procedural memories. As a result, humans do not improve on learned tasks and do not consolidate the learned material. In consecutive NREM and REM phases, memories are played back to and from the hippocampus so that their representations in the neocortex can be optimized. This, among others, serves generalization and minimization of memory interference. However, new studies involving nootropic medications such as modafinil (Provigil™) show no decrease in memory skills following several days of sleep deprivation.
Popular sayings such as "sleep on it" or "consult the pillow" reflect the theory that remolded memories produce new creative associations in the morning. According to some sleep clinic research, the negative effects of sleep deprivation are particularly dramatic in procedural learning. Many studies demonstrate that a healthy sleep produces a significant learning performance boost. Healthy sleep must include the appropriate sequence and proportion of NREM and REM phases, which play a different role in memory consolidation-optimization process.
Other researchers' theories on additional functions of sleep differ significantly. One older idea is the energy conservation theory. Others claim that REM sleep is needed to "refresh" the brain after NREM phase, or that REM is needed to prevent stasis of fluids in the eye. These theories have dwindling support in the sleep research community.
