Dream Interpretation | To dream of a pelican, denotes a mingling of disappointments with successes. To catch one, you will be able to overcome disappointing influences. To kill one, denotes that you will cruelly set aside the rights of others. To see them flying, you are threatened with changes, which will impress you with ideas of uncertainty as to good. Literature | Pelican in Christian art, is a symbol of charity. It is also an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" (Eucherius and Jerome). (See below.) Pelican. A mystic emblem of Christ, called by Dante nostro Pelicano. St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The Bestiarium says that Physiologus tells us that the pelican is very fond of its brood, but when the young ones begin to grow they rebel against the male bird and provoke his anger, so that he kills them, the mother returns to the nest in three days, sits on the dead birds, pours her blood over them, revives them, and they feed on the blood. (Bibl. Nat. Belg., No. 10,074.) "Than sayd the Pellycane, When my byrdts be slayne With any bloude I them renyue [revive]. Scrypture doth record, The same dyd our Lord, And rose from deth to lyue." Skelton: Armoury of Birdts Pelicans. The notion that pelicans feed their young with their blood arose from the following habit:- They have a large bag attached to their under bill. When the parent bird is about to feed its brood, it macerates small fish in this bag or pouch, then pressing the bag against its breast, transfers the macerated food to the mouths of the young. A pelican in her piety is the representation of a pelican feeding her young with her blood. The Romans called filial love piety, hence Virgil's hero is called pius AEneas, because he rescued his father from the flames of Troy. Source: Brewer's Dictionary. |

Pelecanus conspicillatusA pelican is any of several very large water birds with a distinctive pouch under the beak belonging to the bird family Pelecanidae. Along with the darters, cormorants, gannets, boobiess, frigatebirds, and tropicbirds, they make up the order Pelecaniformes. Like other birds in that group, pelicans have all four toes webbed (they aretotipalmate).
They use two different ways to feed:
Pelicans can grow to a wingspan of three meters and weigh 13 kilograms, males being a little larger than females and having a longer bill.
- Group fishing, used by white pelicans all over the world. They will form a line to chase schools of small fish into shallow water, and then simply scoop them up. Large fish are caught with the bill-tip, then tossed up in the air to be caught and slid into the gullet head first.
- Plunge-diving, used almost exclusively by the American Brown Pelican, but only rarely by white pelicans like the Peruvian Pelican of the western South American coast, or the Australian Pelican.
From the fossil record, it is known that pelicans have been around for over 40 million years. Modern pelicans are found on all continents except Antarctica: they are birds of inland and coastal waters and are absent from polar regions, the deep ocean, oceanic islands, and inland South America.
Pelicans are gregarious and nest colonially, the male bringing the material, the female heaping it up to form a simple structure. Pairs are monogamous for a single season but the pair bond extends only to the nesting area; away from the nest mates are independent.
Because of its large beak and pouch, the pelican has a particular place in the public imagination: as one poet wrote, "A wonderful bird is the pelican; his beak can hold more than his belly can..." (The verse is attributed both to Odgen Nash and to Dixon Lanier Merritt.)
Australian PelicanIn medieval Europe, the pelican was thought to be particularly attentive to her young, to the point of providing her own blood when no other food was available. As a result the pelican became a symbol in bestiaries for self-sacrifice, and was used as a symbol in heraldry ("a pelican in her piety").

A pelican crossing (formerly Pelicon Crossing - PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled crossing) is a type of pedestrian crossing. It features a standard set of traffic lights, plus a push button and a further two coloured lamps for pedestrians using the crossing.
![]()
The control panel of a Pelican CrossingThe Pelican Crossing was the orignal type of light controlled crossing, introduced in the 1960s. The pedestrian lights are situated on the far side of the road to the pedestrian. A Puffin crossing has the lights on the same side as the pedestrian.
In most countries, these lights for pedestrians are in the image of a "green man" pictured walking, and a "red man" pictured stationary. In the USA these lamps may take the shape of "Walk"/"Don't walk" messages, although pictograms are also seen in some regions. Pelican crossings sometimes have further non-visual indication that it is safe to cross, such as a beep or vibrating button, in order to assist blind or partially sighted pedestrians.
