The word passion is now used to mean a great enthusiam for some thing, but in a Christian context, the Passion (with a capital P) is the suffering of Jesus Christ in his final days, or a telling of this story in the Gospels. This usage exposes the etymological origins of the word, which lie in the Latin pati: "to suffer".The word is also used to refer to a musical setting of this story. The best known musical settings of the Passion are by Johann Sebastian Bach, who wrote two Passions which have survived intact to the present day, one based on the Gospel of John (the St. John Passion, the other on the Gospel of Matthew (the St. Matthew Passion). In more recent times, the 20th century Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki has written a St. Luke Passion, based on the Gospel of Luke.
Non-musical settings of the Passion story are generally called Passion plays.
In the Roman Catholic Church, the Passion story is depicted in the Stations of the Cross (or Way of the Cross).

Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ is a musical album produced in 1989 by Peter Gabriel. It was originally composed as the soundtrack for the film The Last Temptation of Christ, but Gabriel spent several months after the film's release further developing the music, finally releasing it as a full-fledged album instead of a "movie soundtrack."It is seen as a landmark in the popularization of world music. While music from lands far from the corporation-controlled music industry of the United States and England has certainly flourished, little of it has been heard in the Western world. Passion introduced many listeners to such world-renowned talents as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Maal, paving the way for these and other musicians to find audiences in America.
As a soundtrack for the film, Gabriel used the resources of the organization he founded, WOMAD, to bring together musicians from the Middle East and Africa. He worked with them to create a soundtrack meant to enhance the mood of the movie, based upon the actual music played during the time of Jesus Christ. However, he added a modern ambient musical touch to the original pieces, producing a musical work that has influenced many musicians in the years since its release.
The album has received near-universal praise from audiences around the world. Many have called it Gabriel's finest work, and some have said that his later albums (which have all had similarities to Passion) seem muddled in comparison.
Amazon.com promotes the album by noting its influence on the popularization of world music by stating, "To call Passion a pivotal recording in the development of world music would be a significant understatement."
