(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)
"Panorama" is a long-running current affairs documentary series on BBC television, focusing on investigative journalism. The concept inspired the Australian ABC documentary series Four Corners. Richard Dimbleby was the original presenter, during the 1960s. His son, David Dimbleby, went on to present the programme in later years.Probably the most famous Panorama programme of all time was the interview of Diana, Princess of Wales by Martin Bashir, which occurred after her divorce and in which she admitted that many of the rumours about her private life were true.
The term panorama originally referred to the panoramic format.

The term panoramic format is used to refer to high aspect ratio or wide screen image format. Especially suitable for landscapes, where a lot of scenery can be taken in at a glance.Especially in photography, the panoramic format can be taken to extremes, like in this example showing Riddarfjärden in Stockholm:

(Larger image)Extreme panoramic formats in motion picture are also possible, but requires special projection rooms and projection systems. The first 360 ° installation was at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Another 360° was schown at the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Panorama paintings were very popular in the 19th century. The Bourbaki Panorama in Lucerne, Switzerland shows a circular painting of 1881 painted by Edouard Castres. The painting measures about 10 metres in height with a circumference of more than 100 metres.

Lexicography | Devil's Dictionary | NOVEL, n. A short story padded. A species of composition bearing the same relation to literature that the panorama bears to art. As it is too long to be read at a sitting the impressions made by its successive parts are successively effaced, as in the panorama. Unity, totality of effect, is impossible; for besides the few pages last read all that is carried in mind is the mere plot of what has gone before. To the romance the novel is what photography is to painting. Its distinguishing principle, probability, corresponds to the literal actuality of the photograph and puts it distinctly into the category of reporting; whereas the free wing of the romancer enables him to mount to such altitudes of imagination as he may be fitted to attain; and the first three essentials of the literary art are imagination, imagination and imagination. The art of writing novels, such as it was, is long dead everywhere except in Russia, where it is new. Peace to its ashes -- some of which have a large sale. |
