Medicine | A congenitally hairless and athymic strain of laboratory mouse caused by homozygocity for an autosomal recessive gene(nu/nu). Such mice are virtually devoid of T-lymphocytes and therefore must be reared in an essentially germ-free environment. Source: European Union. (references) |

Pictured is a white nude mouse. The mouse is being held in the rubber-gloved hand of a technician. Nude mice, because of a genetic defect, have no thymus and cannot make certain cells essential for various immune responses. Because of this, they are extremely helpful to scientists working in Immunology Research. Credit: Linda Bartlett (photographer). | Kaposi's sarcoma like lesion in athymic mouse - nude mouse. This lesion was induced by metabolically active cells 4x10(6) injected subcutaneously. Arrow indicated positive result. Left side was injected with fixed cells. Long-term cultured AIDS-KS (Kaposi's Sarcoma) cells were injected into a nude mouse. Within 5 days a subcutaneous lesion formed in the induced region with a marked angiogenic response. A cross-section of these new blood vessel formations appear as open spaces, where one can see dividing epithelial cells and some red blood cells. The cells were stained with a Wright-Gimsa stain and are seen at a magnification of 100x. Credit: Unknown photographer/artist. | |||
