MOISTURE CONTENT

Specialty Definition: MOISTURE CONTENT

DomainDefinition

Chemistry

The amount of water present in a material, e. g. wood or soil, generally expressed as a percentage of the material's oven-dry weight. Source: European Union. (references)

Energy

The water content of a substance (a solid fuel) as measured under specified conditions being the: Dry Basis, which equals the weight of the wet sample minus the weight of a (bone) dry sample divided by the weight of the dry sample times 100 (to get percent); Wet Basis, which is equal to the weight of the wet sample minus the weight of the dry sample divided by the weight of the wet sample times 100. (references)

Environment

1.The amount of water lost from soil upon drying to a constant weight, expressed as the weight per unit of dry soil or as the volume of water per unit bulk volume of the soil. For a fully saturated medium, moisture content indicates the porosity. 2. Water equivalent of snow on the ground; an indicator of snowmelt flood potential. (references)

Geography

The ratio, generally expressed as a percent of the vapour pressure of water present in the atmosphere to that required for saturation at the same temperature. Source: European Union. (references)

Mining

The percentage moisture content equals the weight of moisture divided by the weight of dry soil multiplied by 100. The moisture content of a coal or mineral sample consists of two portions, namely, the free or surface moisture which can be removed by exposure to air, and the inherent moisture which is entrapped in the fuel, and is removed by heating at 200 degrees F (93.3 degrees C). Syn:inherent moisture; water content. (references)

Non-Fiction Usage: MOISTURE CONTENT

SubjectTopicQuote

Business

Standard technical specifications of each product group are set in term of appearance, moisture content, key ingredient content (%), and coli-form (negative). (references)

For example, attempts to use solid waste incineration as a cogeneration source failed because Thailand's municipal solid waste has too high a moisture content. (references)

The company says this system deals effectively with the high moisture content of Thai municipal waste (about 55 percent of the waste by weight would be reduced to the organic pulp for composting) and the compacted bales would be either dry enough to be incinerated or stabilized enough for safe landfill.
