DomainDefinition

Health

Parts of a cell where aerobic production (also known as cell respiration) takes place. (references)

Medicine

Microscopic bodies occurring in the cytoplasm of every cell except bacteria and blue-green algae. They serve as the "power house" of the cell, producing chemical energy in the form of ATP for many cell functions. Source: European Union. (references)

This is an illustration of a cluster of normal cells showing the nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and vacuoles. Credit: Unknown photographer/artist.

Proteins in the cytoplasm target and activate biochemical reactions in specific cellular components, such as the mitochondria and the nucleus. Within the nucleus, gene expression is activated and leads to new protein synthesis, which are formed on the endoplasmic reticulum. These proteins are transported via the Golgi complex for packaging and distribution to cellular membrane and for extracellular release. See artwork: (on disk in file).
