Specialty Definition: California mission

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The California missions are a series of settlements established by Spanish Catholic Franciscans, to Christianize the local Native Americans, but with the added benefit of giving Spain a toehold in the frontier land. The missions introduced European livestock, fruits and vegetables and industry into the California region.

The 21 missions were established along California's El Camino Real (Royal Highway), much of which is now U. S. Highway 101. The mission planting was begun under the leadership of Father Junípero Serra in 1769, and concluded in 1823, although Serra had died in 1784. Father Fermín Francisco Lasuén took up Serra's work and established nine more from 1786 through 1798. Others established the last three.

Human spaceflight

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Human spaceflight is space exploration with a human crew, and possibly passengers (in contrast to unmanned space missions which are remotely-controlled or robotic space probes). Traditionally, these endeavours have been referred to as manned space missions, although today some prefer to use the term crewed space missions because they consider manned to be sexist. NASA uses the term human spaceflight to refer to its programme of launching people into space.

As of 2003 they have been carried out by the United States, the Soviet Union (later Russia), and the People's Republic of China.

Human spaceflight missions beyond Earth orbit have been carried out by the United States only: to the Moon. NASA's Apollo program landed twelve people on the Moon and returned them to Earth: Apollo 11-17, except 13, i.e. six missions, with each time three astronauts of which two landed on the Moon.

On occasion, passengers of other species - dogs (Laika), chimpanzees (Ham), monkeys - have ridden aboard spacecraft. Some of these were killed in space, others were returned to earth alive.

The first human spaceflight was Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made one orbit around the earth.

Apart from the US, Russia, and China, countries like India, Japan have active space programs. Indian Parliament recently sanctioned funds to Indian Space Research Organization for a human spaceflight by 2008. Japan is also rumoured to be involved in human spaceflight research.

Mission

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A mission literally means a something that is sent (from the Latin missum (sent)). Thus we may refer to space exploration expeditions as "missions", or to a diplomatic outpost as a "mission" in a foreign territory.

A widespread activity in religions of the proselytising kind comprises sending "missions" to convert and support new adherents. Some churches reflect the primacy of mission work in their structure and nomenclature. The term missionary stems from the proselytising sense of "mission". (see for instance: California mission).

The study of missions, particularly Christian missions, is missiology.

In military parlance, armed forces carry out missions as designated tasks. They obey with no necessary requirement for belief in the mission -- though such belief might lift morale.

Analogously to the religious use, some businesses see and label their marketing practices as "missions". Other businesses may simply subscribe to mission statements as credos.

The Mission is a 1986 film set in a Christian mission.
