Bible

Media Heb. Madai, which is rendered in the Authorized Version (1) "Madai," Gen. 10:2; (2) "Medes," 2 Kings 17:6; 18:11; (3) "Media," Esther 1:3; 10:2; Isa. 21:2; Dan. 8:20; (4) "Mede," only in Dan. 11:1. We first hear of this people in the Assyrian cuneiform records, under the name of Amada, about B.C. 840. They appear to have been a branch of the Aryans, who came from the east bank of the Indus, and were probably the predominant race for a while in the Mesopotamian valley. They consisted for three or four centuries of a number of tribes, each ruled by its own chief, who at length were brought under the Assyrian yoke (2 Kings 17:6). From this subjection they achieved deliverance, and formed themselves into an empire under Cyaxares (B.C. 633). This monarch entered into an alliance with the king of Babylon, and invaded Assyria, capturing and destroying the city of Nineveh (B.C. 625), thus putting an end to the Assyrian monarchy (Nah. 1:8; 2:5,6; 3:13, 14). Media now rose to a place of great power, vastly extending its boundaries. But it did not long exist as an independent kingdom. It rose with Cyaxares, its first king, and it passed away with him; for during the reign of his son and successor Astyages, the Persians waged war against the Medes and conquered them, the two nations being united under one monarch, Cyrus the Persian (B.C. 558). The "cities of the Medes" are first mentioned in connection with the deportation of the Israelites on the destruction of Samaria (2 Kings 17:6; 18:11). Soon afterwards Isaiah (13:17; 21:2) speaks of the part taken by the Medes in the destruction of Babylon (comp. Jer. 51:11, 28). Daniel gives an account of the reign of Darius the Mede, who was made viceroy by Cyrus (Dan. 6:1-28). The decree of Cyrus, Ezra informs us (6:2-5), was found in "the palace that is in the province of the Medes," Achmetha or Ecbatana of the Greeks, which is the only Median city mentioned in Scripture. Specialty Definition: Mass media

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Mass media are those media reaching large numbers of the public via radio, television, movies, magazines, newspapers and the World Wide Web. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines.

During the 20th century, the advent of mass media was driven by technology that allowed the massive duplication of material at a low cost. Physical duplication technologies such as printing, record pressing and film duplication allowed the duplication of books, newspapers and movies at low prices to huge audiences. Television and radio allowed the electronic duplication of content for the first time.

Mass media had the economics of linear replication: a single work could make money proportional to the number of copies sold, and as volumes went up, units costs went down, increasing profit margins further. Vast fortunes were to be made in mass media.

We also need to discuss mass media in different countries. Mass media in India is discussed in a separate section below.

The Internet and mass media

During the last decade of the 20th century, the advent of the World Wide Web marked the first era in which any individual could have a means of exposure on the scale of mass media. For the first time, anyone with a web site can address a global audience, although serving high levels of web traffic is still expensive. It is possible that the rise of peer-to-peer technologies may have begun the process of making the cost of bandwidth manageable.

Medes

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The Medes were an Iranian people, who lived in the northeast portion of that country. Towards the end of the 7th century BC, a large Median empire developed, which under Cyaxares helped overthrow the power of Assyria. Under his successor, Astyages, the Persians - a related and subject people - revolted under Cyrus the Great, and took over the empire.

Media and Politics

Poland has freedom of press since the fall of communism. However, TV and radio are still politically controlled, via Radio and TV Committee, currently by leftist government circles.
They often use news programs in public TV as means of propaganda. For example, leader of post-communist party, Leszek Miller is interviewed on public TV more often than Prime Minister, President or Speaker of the Parliament (currently, May 2003, Miller is Prime Minister).

Medium

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A medium (plural media - it is directly a Latin word meaning "the one in the middle", however mediums is also sometimes used) is a carrier of something -- in the most popular sense, of information, mostly human ideas. Depending on the actual characteristics of the medium, it serves transmission or storage of information or both.

For example:

By metonymy, the industries which produce news and entertainment content for the mass media are often called "the media" (in much the same way the newspaper industry is called "the press").

Marshall McLuhan was famous for saying (among other things), "The medium is the message."

See also:

Regional:

Medium is also the term used for an individual who claims the ability to receive messages from spirits, ghosts, or other discorporate entities, or claims that they can channel such entities (that is, speak or write with the voice of these entities rather than in their own voice). While many believe that such individuals are either self deluded or are simply charlatans, popular mediums often have many followers who believe strongly in their purported abilities. Examples of popular modern-day mediums are Sylvia Brown and John Edward.

External Links

Medium also refers to an average or mean in a range of sizes or conditions. Usually, the term is used when there are only a few different sizes in the range, rather than many. For example, items such as drinks at a fast food restaurant might come in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large.

A footnote: the peculiarities of the English language, and its redundant use of the same words for different things, allows English speakers to make such statements as "Small medium at large!" that are both comprehensible and mildly amusing.
