Bible

Mantle (1.) Heb. 'addereth, a large over-garment. This word is used of Elijah's mantle (1 Kings 19:13, 19; 2 Kings 2:8, 13, etc.), which was probably a sheepskin. It appears to have been his only garment, a strip of skin or leather binding it to his loins. _'Addereth_ twice occurs with the epithet "hairy" (Gen. 25:25; Zech. 13:4, R.V.). It is the word denoting the "goodly Babylonish garment" which Achan coveted (Josh. 7:21). (2.) Heb. me'il, frequently applied to the "robe of the ephod" (Ex. 28:4, 31; Lev. 8:7), which was a splendid under tunic wholly of blue, reaching to below the knees. It was woven without seam, and was put on by being drawn over the head. It was worn not only by priests but by kings (1 Sam. 24:4), prophets (15:27), and rich men (Job 1:20; 2:12). This was the "little coat" which Samuel's mother brought to him from year to year to Shiloh (1 Sam. 2:19), a miniature of the official priestly robe. (3.) Semikah, "a rug," the garment which Jael threw as a covering over Sisera (Judg. 4:18). The Hebrew word occurs nowhere else in Scripture. (4.) Maataphoth, plural, only in Isa. 3:22, denoting a large exterior tunic worn by females. (See DRESS.). Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.

Specialty Definition: Gas mantle

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

A gas mantle is a device that gives off considerable light when heated. The name refers to its original power source, existing gaslights which filled the streets of Europe and North America in the late 19th century, mantle referring to the way it hung above the flame. Today they remain in use in camp lighting, such as the famous Coleman Lantern. In addition to their usage in gas lamps, similar mantles are used in kerosene lamps.

The gas mantle was one of the many inventions of Auer von Welsbach, a chemist who studied rare earth elements in the 1880s. His first process used a mixture of 60 percent magnesium oxide, 20 percent lanthanum oxide and 20 percent yttrium oxide which he called Actinophor. To produce a mantle guncotton is impregnated with the mixture and then heated; the cotton burns away leaving a solid (but fragile).

These original mantles gave off a green-tinted light and were not very successful, and his first company formed to sell them failed in 1889. A new mixture of 99 percent thorium oxide and 1 percent cerium oxide gave off a much "whiter" light, and after introducing it commercially in 1892 it quickly spread throughout Europe. The gas mantle remained an important part of street lighting until the widespread introduction of electric lighting in the early 1900s.

A mantle is basically a small sock made of silk or asbestos. Asbestos can withstand high temperatures, but is also toxic. Silk-based mantles are extremely brittle once first burned, and must be replaced frequently.

The traditional mantle is coated in thorium, which when heated enough (with burning gas or kerosene vapour) incandescess brightly.

Thorium is radioactive, and pure thorium becomes more radioactive as it ages owing to its decay products. It should be handled with care. Owing to concerns about the radioactivity of thorium, alternatives are now used in some countries, but these are more expensive and less efficient.

Mantle

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The mantle is the highly viscous region in the interior of Earth that lies between 30-35 km and 2 900 km below the surface. Found here are: olivines, pyroxenes, and the silicate perovskite, a dense form of enstatite.NEED MORE INFORMATION!!

The upper mantle is known as the asthenosphere.

Refer to Earth for detailed information on the interior of the planet.

A mantle is an organ possessed by molluscs used to secrete their shells.

A mantle is also a device used in gas lamps and kerosene lamps to produce a bright light; see: gas mantle

A mantle (also mantel) is the stone or wood beam which serves as a support for the structure above a Fireplace, together with the whole framework, whether of wood, stone, etc., that acts as an ornament of the same.

A mantle is also a rock climbing move. It is used to surmount a ledge or feature in the rock in the absence of any useful holds directly above.

Mickey Mantle

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Mickey Charles Mantle (October 20, 1931 - August 13, 1995) was an American baseball player. He is regarded as one of the best baseball players of all time. He played his entire professional career for the New York Yankees.

He was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma. He was named in honor of Mickey Cochrane, a famous baseball player, by his father, who was an amateur player and fervid fan. Apparently his father was not aware that Cochrane's real name was Gordon, and in later life, Mickey Mantle expressed great relief that his father had not known Cochrane's real first name, as he would have hated to be named Gordon.

Mantle was a switch-hitter whose career was mostly in center field. He had played shortstop in the minor leagues, but on arrival at the Yankees became the regular centerfielder (playing only a few games at shortstop and third base in 1952 to 1955) until 1967, when he was moved to first base. As a centerfielder, he replaced Joe DiMaggio, whose retirement coincided with Mantle's arrival. Among Mantle's many accomplishments are All-time World Series records for home runs (18), runs scored (42), and runs-batted-in (40).

On January 16, 1961 Mantle became the highest paid baseball player by signing a $75,000 contract.

Mantle announced his retirement from baseball on March 1, 1969 and in 1974 he was inducted into the United States Baseball Hall of Fame; his uniform number 7 was retired by the Yankees.

Mickey Mantle died on August 13, 1995 in Dallas, Texas and was interred in the Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery in Dallas.
