The Main is a river in Germany, 524 km in length, and one of the more voluminous tributaries of the Rhine river. It flows through the Bundesländer Bavaria and Hessen. Its catchment basin competes with the Danube for water; as a result, much of its boundaries are identical with the European Watershed. The Main is formed near Kulmbach by the joining of its two headstreams, the Red Main and the White Main. The former one rises from the Frankish Alb, is 50 km inlength and runs through Creussen and Bayreuth. The latter one's source is located in the mountains of the Fichtelgebirge; it is 41 km in length. Affluents of the Main are Regnitz, Frankish Saale, Tauber, and Nidda.
The largest city abutting the Main is Frankfurt am Main. Behind the junction of the headstreams the Main River passes the following cities: Burgkunstadt, Lichtenfels, Staffelstein, Hallstadt, Zeil, Hassfurt, Schweinfurt, Volkach, Kitzingen, Ochsenfurt, Würzburg, Karlstadt, Gemünden, Lohr, Marktheidenfeld, Wertheim, Miltenberg, Obernburg, Aschaffenburg, Seligenstadt, Hanau, Offenbach, Frankfurt, Hattersheim, Flörsheim, Rüsselsheim. The Main finally meets the Rhine at Mainz.

This shows the south entrance of the Clinical Center circa 1982 when the main entrance faced south. Credit: Unknown photographer/artist. | This is a scanning electron microscope image from normal circulating human blood. One can see red blood cells, several white blood cells including lymphocytes, a monocyte, a neutrophil, and many small disc-shaped platelets. Red cells are nonnucleated, and contain hemoglobin, containing iron an important protein which allows the cell to carry oxygen to other parts of the body. They also carry away carbon dioxide from the lungs. The infection-fighting white blood cells, are classified in 2 main groups: granular and agranular. Granulocytes are formed in bone marrow, agranulocytes are produced by lymph nodes and spleen. There are two types of agranulocytes: lymphocytes, fight disease by producing antibodies and thus destroying foreign material, and monocytes. Platelets are tiny cells formed in bone marrow and are necessary for blood clotting. Credit: Bruce Wetzel (photographer). Harry Schaefer (phot. | ||
