Specialty Definition: Lemon

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Lemons are the citrus fruit from the tree Citrus limon. They are cultivated primarily for their juice, though the pulp and rind are also used, primarily in cooking. Lemons contain a large amount of citric acid which gives them a sour taste.

The lemon was unknown to the ancient Romans and Greeks; it is first mentioned in the book of Nabathae on agriculture in the third or fourth century. Lemons were not cultivated in the West until after the Arab conquests. They were cultivated in Genoa in the mid-fifteenth century, and appeared in the Azores in 1494. Lemons were once used by the British navy to combat scurvy, as they provided a large amount of vitamin C. The British navy originally thought lemons were overripe limes which they resemble and their sailors became known as limeys, not lemonys.

Both lemons and limess are regularly served as lemonade (natural lemon with water and sugar), or as a garnish for drinks such as cola with a slice either inside or on the rim of the glass. Lemon juice is typically dripped onto battered fish dishes in restaurants in the United Kingdom and other countries.

Lemon (anime)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Lemon is a term used in reference to anime and manga, especially fanfiction, to describe material with explicit sexual content, such as hentai, yaoi, and yuri.

Some have elaborated this into a string of different terms involving citrus to describe the "rating" of a particular piece; a hint of citrus indicates subtle innuendo, etc. The most common derivative is lime, which denotes sexual content that is not quite explicit. The use of this term (and its derivatives) is increasing in non-anime fanfiction communities.

The term is derived from the anime video series Cream Lemon, a historically important sexually explicit anime (though not quite the first).

Lemon (economics)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Lemon is a term used to refer to something purchased which turns out to have significant hidden flaws. The flaws are a function of the specific example of the product, and not of all examples of the product. The term is most commonly used for automobiles. The term was created by economist and Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel laureate George A. Akerlof in 1970.

Preserved Lemons

Ingredients: Lemons Salt

Poke holes in the lemons with a sharp knife. Pack them in an airtight jar, separating them from one another with salt. Cover the jar, store in a dark place for a day. If the lemons have not released enough liquid to cover, add salt and reseal.

Store in a cool dark place for approximately two weeks. Refrigerate afterwards.

How is the lemon used? Sliced or whole? Such info would be useful.

Preserved Lemons are a common flavoring agent in Moroccan cuisine, particularly in very slow braises known as tagines. They are also a voguish cocktail garnish in New York City at the time of this writing (12/2001).
