LATENT HEAT OF FUSION

Specialty Definition: LATENT HEAT OF FUSION

DomainDefinition

Mining

The amount of heat required to change 1 g of a substance at the temperature of its melting point from the solid to the liquid statewithout changing temperature. (references)

Physics

The quantity of heat required to change unit mass of a substance from the solid to the liquid state without change of temperature. If an alloy having a solidification(or fusion)range instead of a unique fusion temperature is considered, practical calculations may be done with the balanced mean value of the heat of fusion of the components and adding for the solidification range the average of the specific heat of the solid and of the liquid alloy multplied by the difference of temperature between the limits of this range.
