Specialty Definitions: Laminar Flow

DomainDefinitions

Aerospace

In fluid flow, a smooth flow in which no crossflow of fluid particles occur between adjacent streamlines; hence, a flow conceived as made up of layers - commonly distinguished from turbulent flow. (references)

Geography

Flow in which the air moves smoothly along streamlines which are arranged in parallel layers or sheets: opposite of turbulent flow. Source: European Union. (references)
Flow in which the fluid particles move approximately in parallel paths with no significant transverse mixing. Source: European Union. (references)

Hydrologic

Streamline flow in which successive flow particles follow similar path lines and head loss varies with velocity to the first power. (references)

Mechanical Engineering

Flow state characterised by parallel or laminar movement of particles. Source: European Union. (references)
Flow in which adjacent layers do not mix, except at molecular scale. Source: European Union. (references)

Meteorology & Standards

The streamlined flow of a fluid where viscous forces are more significant than inertial forces, generally below a Reynolds number of 2000. Source: European Union. (references)

Mining

Water flow in which the stream lines remain distinct and the flow direction at every point remains unchanged with time. It is characteristic of the movement of ground water. CF:turbulent flow; lamellar flow.Syn:streamline flow; sheet flow. (references)

Specialty Definition: Laminar flow

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In fluid dynamics, laminar flow is a flow regime characterized by high momentum diffusion, low momentum convection, and pressure and velocity independence from time. It is the opposite of turbulent flow. The (dimensionless) Reynolds number characterizes whether flow conditions lead to laminar or turbulent flow.
