"The affinity of the Kafir tribes ... including the Kafirs proper and the people of Congo, is based upon the various idioms spoken by them, the direct representatives of a common, but now extinct, mother tongue. This aggregate of languages is now conveniently known as ... the Bantu linguistic system." - K. Johnston: Africa, p. 447. Source: Brewer's Dictionary.

Specialty Definition: Kaffir

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Kaffir (or Kafir) is an Arabic word meaning liar. In a religious context it is often used to mean infidel, unbeliever, i.e., a non-Muslim.

In South Africa, some white people, especially among Afrikaners, use the word Kaffir as a derogatory term referring to persons of aboriginal African descent; it is a counterpart of the North American word nigger.

Kaffir is also a variety of lime, the Kaffir lime leaves used in cooking.
