The reduction of prepared ores of iron to metallic iron, as in the blast furnace. The reduction and purification of semirefined iron, such as pig iron, or a mixture of pig iron, scrap iron, and scrap steel, to form substantially pure iron or steel, as in the electric furnace, open- hearthfurnace, puddling furnace, or Bessemer converter.
