Specialty Definitions: Ion Exchange

DomainDefinitions

Chemistry

A chemical process involving the reversible interchange of ions between a solution and a particular solid material. Source: European Union. (references)

Health

Reversible chemical reaction between a solid, often an ION exchange resin, and a fluid whereby ions may be exchanged from one substance to another. This technique is used in water purification, in research, and in industry. (references)

Mining

Reversible exchange of ions contained in a crystal for different ions in solution without destruction of crystal structure or disturbance of electrical neutrality. The process is accomplished by diffusion and occurs typically in crystals possessing one- or two-dimensional channelways where ions are relatively weakly bonded. Also occurs in resins consisting of three-dimensional hydrocarbon networks to which many ionizable groups areattached. Syn:base exchange. (references)
